Hi everyone! I am getting into the final stages of hop jumping for my surgery (if all goes well, should be early October)...I'm curious about the pain after surgery. Let's say I'm a bit of a baby and I'm kind of terrified of how badly it will hurt. So, on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 is low 10 is high), what would you rate the pain?

I have a pretty high pain tolerance, but am also allergic to most of the non-NSAID pain meds they typically use after surgery, so I managed my pain with Tylenol 3 for the first day home, and didn't take anything after that.  I didn't think the pain was any worse that my C-sections.  I was a bit uncomfortable laying down flat for the first few days, so I slept in a recliner.  I would call it a 3 or 4.  Don't let it scare you away.  It will be worth it.

Either way, nothing will stop me...I've come this far and everyone says "my only regret is not doing it sooner". I'm getting over the flu right now and I thought I was going to die lol.

The gas pains in my shoulder were worse than incisional pain.  At my worst, pain was about a 7.

Like Lisa I had the gas pressure under my diaphragm that caused the shoulder pain. For about 6-7 hours the day after surgery I was in pretty bad pain. I'd say 7 to 8. My stomach was sore, but not bad at all. I'd say a 3-4 there. Once the shoulder pain went away I was just sore. Not everybody gets the shoulder pain. My brother had it for about 30 minutes. It was painful, but tolerable.

I just had surgery 2 weeks ago. The pain right out of surgery was worse than I was expecting. It felt like a huge weight on my chest and I just laid there moaning. They gave me morphine in the hospital. I did get up and walk the same day. I was so scared of blood lots and they tell you to walk as much as you can to heal faster so I did. I then was given the morphine and nausea meds every 4 hours so I felt ok. When I left the hospital I had Percocet and took that for about 3 days every 6-7 hours. Gradually less and less. I have been sleeping in the recliner. The last 5 days I start in the bed but wake up around 2-3 sore and finish sleeping in the chair. I feel pretty good today. The pain is from gas and/or upset stoma*****isions don't hurt. When I sneeze it is the worst but just for a second. I take a nausea pill about 1 a day and haven't had a pain med for a couple of days now. I have been walking 10 min here and there. But today I went to my walking park and tried to walk what I had been. Doing before surgery which was 1 hour about 3 mph. Well I made it 40 min and it was harder than I thought so I guess I am not healed as fully as I imagined. My pain level was 8-9.  Right out of surgery but I slept through a good part of it with the meds. At home the first week it was 3-4. Now it only hurts if I move a certain way or sneeze. Not too bad. And by the 3rd week I don't expect to have much pain at all. Hope. This helps.

The worst for me was that horrid gas pain in my chest cavity. That only lasted a few days, and the nurses kept me well medicated. The incisions didn't really hurt much at all. More of an ache, really.

The pain took me by surprise. Apparently I don't have the high pain tolerance that I used to. lol  But it's still worth it! Use your pain meds and WALK! I'd say my worst pain was a 7. But after about 3 or 4 days I was starting to feel so much better. By the end of the first week I wasn't even taking regular tylenol. You will do just fine!
