I think I have a UTI, what do I take
I use the same antibiotics I used pre-RNY (usually cipro). If it really hurts you can ask for some phenazopyridine which is supposed to turn your urine into something that numbs whatever it touches, it helped make the first day more comfortable until the antibiotics started to help. I also make sure and drink lots of water and 100% cranberry juice. Data is mixed about whether or not the cranberry juice really helps, but I swear it does
Feel better soon!
Any antibiotic is fine (as long as you aren't allergic, of course).
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
They may just automatically put you on Cipro or something, but they usually culture it too to know specifically the type of bacteria and which antibiotic you need for it. I'd head in asap though, UTI's are nothing to mess around with, they can lead to a serious kidney infection. I wouldn't just have them call it in either on your own suspicion because it's more beneficial to you for it to be cultured.
