Update on edema
They admitted me from the ER to the hospital for a 23-hour evaluation (but released me this morning after giving me Lasix last night and a sodium drip). The BNP was only 50, so they ruled out heart issues first thing, and all the liver stuff came back ok. Kidneys, though... well, not entirely sure. My thiamine level is very low (my PCP did not check that with my yearly labs 2 months ago), the sodium level in my blood is (was) low, and I have a higher amount of protein in my urine than is normal (but the level is not extreme). The tentative diagnosis is something called "nephrotic syndrome", but there is no evidence of any kidney disease that would cause it (all the other labs are normal), so right now they are assuming that it is a result of a combination of the low B1 and some temporary (hopefully) decrease in kidney function (which would cause low sodium and high protein) as a result of "injury" during the lithotripsy.
The swelling is much better today but not completely gone. I will have labwork repeated in 72 hours and follow-up with the urologist on Wednesday (as long as nothing changes).

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
I'm glad it wasn't more serious. Did they give you a B1 shot?
B1 is something I think we should all be getting checked regularly and we should check to lab orders to make sure we know what is and is not being ordered - my PCP actually failed to order thiamine and ferritin when I had labs done a couple weeks ago and I didn't check the order in advance because his office faxed it to the lab, so I never had it in my hand. I got him to order those when I saw him a couple days ago, but next time, I will ask to review the order before they fax it.

Two, actually: one last night and one this morning.
I knew that my PCP had not ordered a couple of things, but I didn;t notice until I was already at the lab with the slip. Like you, next time I will check before I leave his office.

Are you supplementing with additional B-1, is it possible for IV B-1? Guess I should Google it, just know I've have both low B-1 and B-6 and have had to supplement individually at various times. It's also gone really high and was told to cut back.
Hope it's temporary and you feel better, Lora.

Hi Lora, I don't post much, but I follow you and others that share your experiences and knowledge with the rest of us who are on this journey. I too like others, was concerned when I read your post yesterday. I'm so glad that you went and got checked out and I pray that everything turns out ok. On a different note, I am scheduled to have total knee replacement of both of my knees this summer. My right knee replacement is scheduled for July 9th and the left is scheduled for August 27th. I know that you recently had one of yours replaced. How is that going?
