Pre-Op diet

My surgery is in 2 days. My Dr is not requiring me to follow a pre-op diet but I want to eat smarter beforehand anyways. Would you consider black beans lean protein? Or do they have too many carbs to eat before surgery?

Beans have carbs but they also have a lot of fiber (and constipation can be a problem post-op, so the fiber is VERY helpful) so they are an excellent choice for a protein both pre-op and post-op.  Carbs are not the enemy.  Your body needs them to function properly and they can help avoid kidney stones (which we are more prone to after RNY).  It is "white carbs" (rice, white flour products, pasta, processed sugar, etc.) that you need to avoid.  Whole grains, vegetables, legumes, and fruits are all part of a balanced diet, and you are far more likely to stick to your new eating plan if it is balanced.  Otherwise, it is just another diet that you will eventually tire of (and we all know what happens when you go "off" a diet!)

Wow, Read, read, read. I cant say it enough. Learn as much as you can. You'll need to be prepared for after surgery. Do you know if youll be following a post-op diet? Have you talked to a Nutritionist?  Your not on a liquid diet prior to this surgery? Sorry for all the questions. But it seems your going into this blindsided. Good Luck on your journey.

Many surgeons don't recommend a liquid diet pre op. Some don't recommend any special diet at all, or just clear liquids the day before, or nothing by  mouth for 12 hours before surgery.

Yes, I will be following a post-op diet, and no, I'm not going into this blindsided. I have been preparing for this for 9 months now and have definitely done my research. My doctor is not requiring me to do a pre-op diet because my bmi is "only 40". I was just asking the question to try to broaden my food options.

If your doc didn't recommend any special diet, I would just eat lightly, nothing high in fat, no junk food.  Just small, healthy meals.

Hi,

My surgery is also in 2 days. I however have been on liquid diet for 12 days! It has been very hard but I'm glad i have been able to get through it. I have cheated but no fat and no sugar mostly just  bit of chicken a couple of times. Oh and a cup of popcorn. I'm glad its almost over but at least i have been practicing to eat what i will be eating post op. My husband is a RN and has been doing all the cooking so i wont be tempted. God Bless and stay in touch we will be starting this on the same day. I also have a BMI of 40 actually less now that i have lost 8 lbs all in 12 days!
