Medicaid

I don't have a problem with Medicaid but I do have a problem also with Medicaid paying for services that my own insurance won't cover, especially since the government is talking about starting to tax what they call "Cadillac" insurance plans (plans with low deductibles and liberal benefits) at a high rate in order to encourage companies to institute high deductible plans to encourage lowering the overall cost of medical care since it is hoped that more insured people will be more frugal with their health care spending.

Medicaid varies somewhat from state to state.  I'm in Ohio, and here they do not pay for non-prescription items, even if a doctor says you need them.  For instance, they won't pay for baby asprin, even if a cardiologist says you need to take one every day.

The OP may be mistaken. But in Ohio, there is a tollfree  number you can call to find out what your Medicaid covers and doesn't cover.  I don't understand how they could refuse to tell recipients what is and is not covered.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

In Ohio, Medicaid does not cover over the counter supplements.  Maybe it does in some states.  I suspect the OP is mistaken about that, though.

Not all Medicaid plans pay for protein and vitamins - mine doesn't.  Maybe the one in your state doesn't, either.  When I had private insurance they actually did pay for supplements - so I guess it depends upon your plan.

It probably depends on your plan and how much you are paying.  I'm not an authority on insurance but we do pay additional for our retirement "gap" insurance.  It doesn't cover supplements but our food expense is lower so the vitamins make the difference.

I have Colorado medicaid and I don't think they pay for it. I haven't actually checked into it because I'm actually spending less on protein than I did on junky food.

I had a friend who had her Dr write her a script for food stamps because she was diagnosed a celiac, Wtf?! Meat cheese fruits. Can't get cheaper than that. Lol.
They wouldn't give her the food stamps.

You have to meet income guidelines to get food stamps.  You don't need a script and if you don't meet the income guidelines, the scrips won't matter.

Now, when they calculate your income to see if you qualify, they will deduct certain medical expenses.  So if you have a lot of medical expenses, you might be able to qualify even if your income itself is above the guidelines. But your doctor writing a script that says you need food stamps is not going to matter.

I told her that I didn't think the script would work. She was so frantic over her new diet that she cried and kept complaining that she didn't know how she was going to pay for it. I told her its an opportunity to quit spending money on frozen items and start eating fresh food and actually eating healthy. I could manage but then again I'm a couponer.

First off there is nothing wrong with being on Medicaid. Im on it due to being extremely disabled. Id love to be able to work, but was told id couldnt work. Medicare/ medicaid barely give you anything. I barely survive. I pay for all my bills and vitamins, meal replacements etc..and they wont raise my foodstamps even after i fought and appealed their decision. So please dont be harsh on someone on assistants.
