Fat does NOT cause dumping and not all digestive upset is dumping

LOL.  I originally put in the hair-pulling smiley but took it out before I posted since I figured I probably already sounded cranky enough!

I've said the same thing many times, but then someone always posts and insists that every dumps in their own way (so if they just farted, that might be their way of dumping) and that people can dump on all kinds of things (like eggs, chicken, um someone posted recently that caffeine could cause dumping), and I get tired of arguing.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

Yes, I have seen those posts, too, and I usually do not bother to argue, either, because usually those people don't CARE what unimportant places like the Mayo Clinic or the NIH have to say about it.

(It was the caffeine thing that pushed me over the edge today.)

I just read the entry on dumping syndrome at mayoclinic.com:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/dumping-syndrome/DS00715

As I read it, they attribute early dumping to the rapid emptying of the stomach contents in general.  It is only late dumping that they attribute specifically to carbohydrates.  However, both can be exacerbated by sugars.

While I am not disagreeing with you because I don't know, but it does say in some of my material from my nutrition class that fat & sugar can cause dumping. This same material is probably printed in many of the books that people get in these classes. That is where the confusion comes from I would think. Maybe enough people got sick on fat that they threw that in since the symptoms are somewhat similar.

A couple months ago I posted a question about dumping from fat for this same reason - my surgeon's information has all over it that a WLS patient can dump from both sugar and fat. In fact, at every check up I have to fill out a form that asks if I dump, if it is caused by fat or sugar or both, and what my symptoms were. I just assumed that since my information said I could dump from both, that I could. Lora cleared up the difference for me though after I posted. And I think you may be right - some surgeons lump it together because the symptoms are very similar.

Well I for one, don't care if you all get cranky, I am just thankful for all the things I have learned from you "Vets" on here!  The fact that you all care enough to monitor and stay active on here after all the years you have , means alot to most of us newer ones.....  If it had not been for some of ****ro Girl's very descriptive explanations of dumping, I would have taken myself to the ER in the beginning!!  I for one, get the dizzy/lightheadedness thing if I eat something with too many sugar grams....and all my doctor's office had ever really warned me about was the diarrhea dumping.  So I think you are forgiven if you are cranky!  Hope the kidney stones settle down soon for you.......

THANK YOU!!! I read threads about dumping on eggs or  chicken or x-y-z that is to totally unrelated to true dumping syndrome that I sometimes wonder ...  Eating more than pouch capacity at one sitting and throwing up the excess is not dumping either ... I copied this excerpt from the Mayo Clinic...

Symptoms

By Mayo Clinic staff

Symptoms of dumping syndrome are most common during a meal or within 15 to 30 minutes following a meal. They include:

Gastrointestinal

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Feeling of fullness

Cardiovascular

  • Flushing
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness
  • Heart palpitations, rapid heart rate

Signs and symptoms also can develop later, usually one to three hours after eating. This is due to the dumping of large amount of sugars into the small intestine (hyperglycemia). In response, the body releases large amounts of insulin to absorb the sugars, leading to low levels of sugar in the body (hypoglycemia). Symptoms of late dumping can include:

  • Sweating
  • Hunger
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness
  • Confusion
  • Heart palpitations, rapid heart rate
  • Fainting

Thanks for this! Hoping I never experience dumping but glad to know the difference. My doctors office, like many others here, actually handed out material at my nutrition class stating dumping can be caused from sugar or fat.
