A1C too high?

Hey! I have everything done in preparation for the surgery(except one more meeting with the PA in June). But I recently got my A1C levels back and it's 5.8 which the doctor said was .2 points into the pre-diabetic range. I called the hospital(Albany Med) to see if that would delay my surgery and the nurse said yes. I would have to wait a whole 3 months and take another test. I'm so confused because I've heard of diabetics getting the surgery, so why would this affect anything? Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks so much!

I would ask the surgeon about this. I have lots of pts that have had surgery of all kinds despite mildly elevated Hgb A1c, or any number of "off" labs.
Each surgeon has their own parameters for what they will and will not allow.

I don't know either my AC1 was through the rough sugars too I was on insulin, Brett's, pills n they did my surgery two years ago. In fact my blood pressure sky rocketed they pumped me full of insulin n when I got home three days later the dr told me don't take anymore insulin. In one week my sugars dropped 60 pts n I lost 13 lbs never taking anymore diabetic anything! Two years out I had an AC1 done mid day it was 5.2 n my sugars were 70! That surgery saved my life! I just had panni done n I'm so blessed!

Whaaaat?   What the heck difference does an A1C make to a surgery?    I wouldn't take the nurse's word for this at all ...

Maybe it has to do with what kind of WLS surgery you were planning on?  My elevated A1C made RNY surgery the best choice available. Please take the time to call your doctor and ask more questions til you feel confident of the answers.  Good Luck.

Call your surgeon. This should not prevent you from having surgery and although its elevated its not horribly so.
