Knee surgery done; lots of pain

Surgery went fine on Tuesday and even PT Wed morning wasn't bad because the surgeon had injected Marcain into the various areas during surgery and that was helping a lot with the pain, but since then I have had a lot of trouble with managing the pain. I don't know. How much is tied to the RNY or the tolerance to Vicodin, but they have been giving me oxycodone every 4 hours and by the end of hour 3 I am miserable! We tried crushing it and that didn't seem to make any difference, and I guess oxycodone isn't available in liquid, so because I have not slept much they gave me an injection of Dilaudid (and took the SCDs off my feet for a while because every time those compress it sends pain up into my knee) so I did sleep for several hours, but I was surprised that I still had some pain.

I will ask the surgeon about it this morning when he comes in, of course, but I hate it because it makes me worry that he is going to think I am some kind of addict. So many doctors don't believe that the RNY affects pain meds!

Other than the pain, and that it makes the PT harder, I am doing well. I have been walking (SLOWLY!) to the bathroom since yesterday morning, and got washed up and dressed both days. Still expect to get out tomorrow.

Gus has been doing well with my
Mom, so that is a relief. She said that he periodically does a search of all the living areas (bedrooms are closed off since he isn't 100% housebroken yet) but she doesn't know of that is some kind if guarding instinct or if he is looking for me.

Like Cindy, I have found that even though it is very difficult bending the knee, i actually feel better when I am
Up moving around than in bed. The knee hurts less standing that laying (lying?!?) in bed.

Just really hoping to get something resolved with the pain med issue .

Oxycodone is available in liquid form. I have it sitting on my kitchen counter as I type this.  My surgery is on tuesday and my doc gave me all my scripts early so that I could get them filled and not have to worry about it at discharge. You should ask them again.   I hope that you find something to help with your pain.  Good Luck to you!

I'm glad surgery went well but sorry you're having so much pain.  I hope that gets better soon.  I bet Gus is looking for you.

I'm a massage therapist, but have several patients who have had knee replacements.

They all speak of a 3-4 day spell that the pain is insane and they wonder what was I thinking... keep up with everything they are telling you, ask for pain meds no matter what they think... rest is essential to healing and if you can't break the pain cycle rest is difficult.

Hoping everything is manageable soon, best of luck with rehab :)

Glad to hear you are up moving around even if it is slowly. From my experience too it feels better to move than to sit still. I am still that way and get stiff on long car rides. The first few days are the worst. Praying for pain to be resolved and the doc to find a med that works. Hang in there-soon you will be glad you had this done!

lortab is about the only one that works for me and comes in liquid. The thing I've found though is it hits me like a drink hard and fast and wears off early. When I had my hernia operation I found if I took half of a dose then took another half dose half way to what the bottle said it worked great so it if twas 2-4 tsp. every 6 hours I'd take 2 then 3 hours later take the other two. It might be worth a try for you.

I agree with this.  Take 1/2 of a dose at regular time, then the other 1/2 of a dose halfway through.  This way, you are still getting the same amount of meds, it will just last a longer time (hopefully).  Good luck!  I'm pulling for you!
