How long after an iron infusion does it take before feeling better?

I was refered to a Hematologist because my iron levels have been dropping for about a year now (I"m 18 mos post op) even though I was taking a total of 113mg of carbonyl iron w/vitamin C. After my labs in November I increased it to 163mg and it still dropped. I just had my first iron infusion a couple of days ago and I'm still feeling dizzy and feel like crap!

How long it will be before I start to feel better?

I had the same problem and ended up getting iron infusions once a month for about a year and a half. I started feeling better by the 2nd or 3rd dose. Hang in there!

Thanks Neen for your reply. Did they check your iron levels first before deciding on a second dose or did they base it on how you still felt? My Hematologist is not checking my iron levels again until May : (

I would definintely not wait until May to get it checked again!  Why does he want to wait that long?  Many people need several infusions to get their level up, in which case you won't feel better yet.

You're right. I will absolutly be requesting another iron check in a week if i'm still feeling the same. Maybe i'm being too impatient but I thought getting the iron infusion done would mean that i would at least feel a "little" better after a couple of days.

I got the treatments monthly and my hematologist did blood work quarterly, so every 3 months I'd get checked.to see where the levels were at. It took awhile to get them to the normal range, but they've been steady for about 2 years now.
