Two phase liver shrinking diet.....Anyone else?

My Dr. (Dr. Julie Ellner San Diego C.A.) requires a two phase liver shrinking diet. Phase one is 3 meals a day, as much lean protein as you want and two cups of vegetables. No dairy, sugar, or caffeine. Phase two is 3 weeks of all liquids before surgery. Has anyone had to do this? I see several people post about liquid pre op diets but I have not seen anyone post about this one.

My Dr. has a 0% mortality rate in 14 years so she must be doing something right! Lol

My doctor requires a 8% weight loss number before even getting a date. I think most places don't require any previous weight loss. So most people have to do 2-4 week all liquid diets pre-op. I have to do a 2 week pre-op diet but it is just low calorie like 1000/day so i can have protein bars, shakes, lean meat, as many non-starchy veggies i want, broths. I am thankful i am not on all liquids for 2 weeks prior since i will pretty much be on all liquids for 2 week post op

I am 12 days post-op today....my pre surgery diet was 2 weeks of nothing but protein shakes.  I have not seen anything like the one you mentioned. However, after my surgery my physician said my liver was still pretty large and it was hard to move it out of the way---so it got beat up a little bit. Not  a big deal but a little longer of the high protein pre-surgery might have helped prevent that. I know the dietician I see said that where she came from they did 3 weeks full liquid before surgery. Good luck---you will make it!

I only had to do one week of liquids.  Three weeks is a long time, and I've never seen a two phase plan like this one.  It sounds like she has had good results with it, though.

I just wanted to mention, though, that I don't think a fatty liver is a big cause of mortality during this surgery.  It can cause them to have to switch from lap to open surgery, but I don't think it's a common cause of death during surgery.

I don't think a fatty liver is a cause of death either. I know it can cause you to have open instead of laproscopic and it's easier for it to get beat up. I think it's interesting that there are so many different pre op diets.

My dr requires a 2 week liver reduction diet....lean protein, veggies, no sugar, low fat...then liquid diet for 3 or 4 days before surgery.

I should start that diet in about a week or so...will find out my specific surgery date this Thursday! :)

Good Luck!
