Oh my goodness, how adorable!
I got my 1st chow back in 1992, cinnamon color and I named him Benjii. Wow he was a tempermental one, only got along with me. He passed away in 2001.
My 2nd chow, a black beautiful rescue named Shadow, awesome dog. Adopted her right after Benjii, unfortunately she passed away of cancer 3 years ago.

I love chows, they're great dogs.

Yes, even when adequately socialized, they are definitely family-oriented dogs, and usually choose one person in the house to bond with primarily if there are multiple household members.  Since I live alone, Khan was very protective of me (he didn't like the vet moving out of his sight when I was in the room, but was fine if they took him in the back for shots and I was not there, so I think he didn't trust the vet not to hurt ME).  He also LOVED his "grandma" and would cover her with kisses, too, but was very aloof with even my brother (who also grew up with Chows and had one as an adult).

i definitely feel safer with a Chow in the house, knowing that they will actively protect me not just bark to raise an alarm as the Scotties would.

Sorry you lost Shadow to cancer.  That's what got Max, too.  :(

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
