How long does it take to start to lose weight after surgery?

I know that it takes the body time to heal after surgery. I am just wondering how long it took some members to actually start to see the numbers on the scale going down..

Obviously everyone is different, but for me I am three weeks out and have lost 44lbs. My sister in law had the same surgery, and didn't lose 40lbs until two months out.

I saw weight lost by the end of the first week.

My surgery was Friday the 11th and I just got on the scale today. I've lost 8 pounds. I don't know how usual or unusual that is.

It took me two weeks. The first week I still had a lot of water weight gain from all the fluids during surgery. I think I weighed more than at my pre-op. Then I lost 10 lbs by week 2.

I had a bunch of water weight gain as well, and I did weigh more after my surgery than i did pre-op! I wonder how common this is.

That is VERY common. At my 3 week check up I had lost 9 pounds but still made it to my goal weight in less than 6 months (my original goal was 140) and my 'oh I can never really do this but I am going to try' weight of 115 in less than a year.

Everyone loses differently, as I am sure you know by now!!

Hang in there,

It depends on the person. Some people retain all the fluids from the surgery and can even gain. My surgeon told me not to weigh right after surgery because of that. So we were aware that there may be a gain. But I wanted to weigh anyways, and I actually lost 4 lbs right away. I guess I didnt retain much liquids. But not everyone is the same...

I know I gained 4 or 5 lbs in the hospital and then lost 10 by the end of week 1. I am a month out (12/18/2012) but don't know how much I've lost because I am boycotting my scale. The hills that I experienced on it made me depressed and killed my motivation. I will wait to see until my dr appointment tomorrow.
