4 1/2 weeks post op question

Started soft food about 4 days ago  and yesterday made a delicious pork loin roast in the crock pot til it fell apart.  Weighed out my two ounces and added my 2 oz of unsweetened applesauce.  Within 5 minutes of eating the pork, I had horrible pain about a 10 on a scale of 10, in my epigastric region.  I tried deep breathing and raising my hands over my head.  Got up and walked around with no relief.  And then, vomited.  The vomiting and nausea kept up for about 4 hours until I was able to take an antinausea pill which I crushed and managed to keep down.  The pain was coming in waves.  Took my liquid Lortab which stayed down and the pain eventually went away.

Has this happened to anyone else?  I manage chicken and chili with ground beef ok.  Been doing just great until this happened.  Woke up feeling tired but other than that no worse the wear.

Any ideas on what happened?  Sure do not want to repeat that ... it will be a loooooonnnnggg time until I eat pork, LOL.

Also, cannot wait to talk to my doctor about not crushing pills after reading that many of you do not crush them!

thanks for any info, recommendations, thoughts

We're about the same amount out. I don't really have advice, but I'd like to stick around to see the answers. What was the roast cooked with? I tried some mini meatloaves with ground turkey last week and I couldn't even get two bites down. It hurt so bad for so long! In a stuck way, not a nausea or crampy way. Anyway, mine was too dry. I was thinking maybe too much sugar or sugar alcohols in your preparation?
Or eating too fast and getting too full too quickly then seriously paying for it. Just my semi-newbie opinion

Hi Jorisue... yeah could have eaten too quickly but I only ate one half ounce and chewed it very well, I thought.  As all these wonderful vets are mentioning... each of us is an individual and we heal at our own speeds.  I am not in any hurry any longer to get meats in.  Was seriously considering today that I may be on my way to being a vegetarian but I doubt it.  Love my meats too much!  Had just cooked it with water.  Kept it plain.  Oh well, don't need it for a while yet.  Good luck to you!

Thanks apurdie.  Not in any rush anymore.  Do not need that kind of pain and all ever if I can help it but was grateful that my body rejected it and wouldn't give up til it got rid of every little drop of the offending food, LOL.

Getting food stuck, or irritating your your pouch is certainly no fun, but realistically what bothers you today, just might go down ok tomorrow.  Most of us have gone through some trial & error.  Chicken and steak can still be an issue for me even 2yrs out.  My best advice is to watch the consistency...gravy can be your friend!, and try warmed fluids before the meal to keep your pouch relaxed.  And as always, chew well!

Whoo Hoo... look at your amazing weight loss.  I appreciate all of you taking time to answer and I am learning so much.  Like the idea of warmed fluids .... hmmm... may try that in a day or two. Meantime, back to "comfort" foods like cottage cheese, ricotta cheese.. soup.. LOL.

Each person is different some can't eat chicken right away, others can do beef without the same results as you had. Pork was my ughhhhh I don't think I'll ever eat that again food. I was finally able to eat pork chops at about 3-4 mo out and I still have issues with pork roast. I have a friend who had the surgery over 5 years ago she still can't eat pork loin. btw I also still can't eat filet mignon at this point. Stay away from the culprit for a little while and revisit it later and see if you can tolerate it yet.

My doc advised after an episode like you described to go back to soft foods or liquids for a day to let the grouchy pouch rest. It worked for me.

wow.. congrats on your amazing weight loss.  Yes, thank you so very much for the words of wisdom.  Got in touch with surgeons office and NP gave me exact same advice.  Just take soft and liquids til pouch settles down.  Wow... I may have to name this pouch since it has its own personality and all!  Feels so good to hear of others experiences!

I have been tolerating meats but I can tell you that pork is a big NO NO for me! lol I tried it, chewed it right and it did not sit well.  I was in so much pain but luckily I didn't throw it up and the pain just passed.  I will NOT have pork again...for a while.
