Edema after RNY?
Have any of you had water retention/Edema after RNY? I am 4 years out and as of recently I am retaining water in my legs and thighs. It is very bothersome, I am on a diuretic but that doesn't seem to be very effective. I say "after RNY" becuase I never had this issue before but I am not blaming it on my WLS.
Just curious to know if anyone else had/has this problem and how did you get it taken care of?
Since I have lost weight I haven't had much trouble with this, unless I ride in the car for hours or eat too much salt. I think now it is more to do with my age and poor circulation. I drink lots of water to flu**** out.

Sometimes edema as you describe is a symptom of low protein levels. I need to get 120-150 gr of proteins a day to make sure my blood level stays normal.

You are still early on. I was able to get 60-80 gr using mostly shakes that early on. Almost 5 years post op - there are days that I can eat. And I still use protein shakes. I had to change over the years what RTD or powder I can use .... (one day things taste OK and a few days or months later - I can't stand it)
Initially - you still have some "stored"proteins and fat your body can use. As I went to maintain my weight loss - I need to get enough proteins if I don't want to lose my muscles. The body is smart and will break down its own muscles to make sure it has steady level of proteins in the blood for repairs. To avoid that - I need to provide my body with enough proteins so not only it cna use that for fuel (since I don't eat a lot of carbs) but also has enough to maintain steady good level.
I am rather muscular and have strong bone structure. Only way to maintain that - is to make sure I give my body what it needs.
There is a point when I started treating the proteins as medicine my body need - the good taste is bonus - I do try to make it easy for me to take. But not taking it - is not an option. Worse come to worse - I mix whey isolate (1 scoop) in 4 oz of water and just drink it. That would provide me with 25-30 gr. I pinch my nose, hold my breath, or do anything what I need to do so I can take it.
Now - it is easier than it was early on. I can mix 1 scoop in 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt and just eat that. Easy,a dn taste good. I rotate 4 different protein powders (some are egg white proteins -- it took me a while to 'like them")

Protein drinks and protein food - Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, cheese, meats and fish... My every meal starts with proteins. My goal is 120 minimum. But knowing that some days I do get less - but not less than 100 - on days I can - I try to get more.
