Hello Everyone - Happy Friday!

I am super excited - hopefully by the end of the weekend I will have my treadmill.  My Hubby is a Craigslist junkie and he is wheeling and dealing :-)

My goal is to run in a 5K by my birthday in April.  I am 15 weeks out and have lost 60 pounds so far.  I feel good and am feeling so good in fact that I keep wanting to run.  I have dreams about running - I have always wanted to do it. My B'day is in April and I thought what an awesome present to give myself - finishing a 5K :-)

Sooo....my question is - what type of running shoes would folks recommend?  I am on a budget so I can't spend a bazillion dollars on shoes but I don't want to injust myself with my cr@ptastic shoes from Target :-)  I will be doing the Couch to 5K program so I will be working myself up to the 5K.

Thanks everyone!

Check jimmyjazz.com i like their prices and they have my favorite, the nike air max 2009 running shoes. They might be out of your budget though. Not sure. But they have a nice selection for great prices.

That is an excellent goal!   I can't wait to see what recommendations you receive for shoes.

I started running by accident (with a little encouragement from Paul) and now I'm up to 3 miles 3-4 times per week.  I ran the Color Run in August and am doing the Santa Hustle 5K a week from Sunday.  Asics are pretty decent and I bought mine at Kohl's.   For Christmas I've asked for a pair of neon yellow Nikes!  My goal is to do a half-marathon either in the fall.

Our local Color Run was going to be my second 5k!  But then I broke my foot.  Stupid foot.  My husband did it in my place with my daughter.  It looked SO FUN!  When I can train again, I want to do one of those mud runs.  But I won't be wearing my ASICS for that!!!

What an awesome goal! I've been a runner for a few years now.  Lesson learned:  BUY GOOD RUNNING SHOES.  I bought New Balance shoes from a department store.  And I thought they were comfortable.  Until I started losing toe nails.  Yep, that is right, they just FELL OFF.

I went to a running store and got properly fitted and bought a new pair.  The difference was amazing!  I'm now on my 2nd pair from that store.  They were only $100, and you can wear them for 500 miles of running (which was a year for me).  $100 per year is a small investment to make sure my feet are in tip top shape!

They actually watch how you run to put you in a shoe for the way you pronate, and they make sure you have them big enough....I wear a ladies 8M shoes...but in runners, I'm in a 9.5!

Happy running!

I know not everyone would agree with this, but I'd go to a running store and have them properly fit you for good sneakers. Get a list of a few together, then look online for the best prices. Don't short-change yourself with bad running sneakers--you'll save yourself from an onslaught of injury. Good luck! broken heart

I completely agree with the posters who have suggested going to a running store and getting fitted.   Don't let whatever size you are now keep you from going.  Runners come in ALL shapes and sizes.  As I lost weight and ran more I had my gait re-analyzed and found I needed a different shoe.  I dont think I have ever paid over 100-125$ for a pair of good shoes.  I get new ones every 400-500 miles.  So far a I have run multiple 5k's, 10k's and 2 1/2 marathons.  I start with the couch to 5K app that goes on your phone and never looked back.  I love running and I hope you do too!!!  Happy running!!!

Yeah the running store things is the best way to go usually, also remember that sometimes as you get better at running the shoes you start in may not work a year later. I went for one model shoe to another but in the same brand and it was a 60 dollar jump in price, I am now looking at changing brands.

Remember to track your miles on your shoes as they are only good for 400-500 miles

I did the Couch to 5k program, ran my first 5k (at Disneyland!), and then broke my foot (at Disneyland!).  I am still waiting for it to heal.  So I look at my ASICS (which I think are sooooooooooo cute) and wish I could wear them.  I love them!  They were well worth the money.

Good luck!!!  Seeing my 'medal' (it's plastic) hanging on my entertainment center as I sit with my foot up still makes me happy!

~Robin (May have to revise from sleeve to RnY to treat severe GERD which is why I'm hanging out here.)
