Hello All -

Happy Friday :-)  I had my three month follow-up post surgery appointment this week and I am still MAD about it.

I have lost 58 pounds in the last three months - I think that is pretty OK - I would have liked to lose more but it is what it is so I am happy about it.  I never once had the PA or the nutritionist or nurse say - Hey you are doing great - you have lost 58 pounds.  Maybe this doesn't happen but I kind of expected a little cheer??  Something??

The nutritionist p!ssed me off so badly that I thought I was going to put her through the wall!  My awesome hubby came with me and the nutritionist offended both os us - my hubby is African American - and I am not - which is not a big deal but the nutritionist asked him for the second time if he cooked 'ethnic' food for me to eat - WTF?  What does that mean?  She also told me that I need to start eating rice, bread, potatoes, crackers etc.  I have known my body for 38 years and I know that if I eat carbs like that I will gain weight - I am also insulin resistant - carbs are not good.  I do eat carbs when I eat fruits, some veggies, dairy products and I supplement with fiber every day.  She told me I HAD to eat carbs - I of course got mad and said that I absolutley would not eat anything unless I felt comfortable with it.  And at this point crackers are not gonna happen.  I told her that they are basically starving me to death and that if I was going to put something in my mouth it was going to be something that I felt was worthwhile - protein, fruit, veggies, dairy etc.

She also yelled at me for not drinking cows milk - GROSS.  I drink almond milk and am very happy with that.  I do not like soy.  She told me that Almond Milk has NO protien in it - not even one gram - again - WTF?  The brand I buy has 8 grams just like a glass of cow jiuce.  She sat and argued with me about this even after I pulled up the nutritional information on my cell phone.  She also told me that string cheese is a horrible thing to eat and that it hardly has any protien in it - again - wtf?  It is a dairy product hooker!

Wow - I kinda just had a fit - am I insane that this was a BS appt?

Oh - snd the best thing - they are only checking my vitamin D because it was low before surgery and they wont check anything else until I am 6 months out - I could be deficient in something and have damage between now and then rght?

OK - I am done - thank you for allowing me to vent

I know each surgeon/bariatric support center is different, but I have never heard of a nut recommending increased carbs -- especially the bread, potato, rice kind!! Even if it was ok, most of us know our bodies and know that carbs are not the way to weight loss for us. I don't want to go against what your program recommends, but I might suggest a different program???? I know that is hard, but perhaps a call to your surgeon's office to express your concerns about the advice you were given might clarify things. And, whether she said it or not, you are to be SOOOOO congratualed on your 58 lb loss. That is AMAZING in three months. And, as for her remarks about your husband's ethnic food... some people are just stupid.

Holy moley. Can you see another dietician?

I wonder what the norm is for blood tests. I had comprehensive work at my three month checkup.

I looked at a couple of nonproprietary sources for the protein content of almond milk. One source said a cup has 3 grams, one said 1 gram. It seems to me that wouldn't matter, since we don't count on food for our calcium due to malabsorption.

It sounds like you are receiving some mixed messages from your NUT.  I would ask to speak with the practice's office manager to relay your concerns.  She could have asked about your family's eating habits by asking what dishes your family prepares on a regular basis rather than making the ethnic statement.  While my NUT encourages us to eat a well balanced diet (moderate amounts of pasta, rice, bread) she also recognizes that for many of her patients these can be trigger foods.

How horrible for  you. It's stories like this that make me glad that my Dr. does not use/require a NUT.

As for blood work. My Dr. only does it after you are 1 year out so I had my labs done with my PCP.

You are doing a great job!!! Don't lose sight of that and keep doing the great job you have been doing!!!

LOL! I was laughing hard when I saw you call your NUT a hooker! Your NUT sounds nut's! I would see if you can find a different nutritionist. Sounds like shes off her knocker!

Just wanted to congratulate you on the 58 lbs and say that is right on track with how much I am losing.  It is less than 2 weeks till my 3 month and I have lost 54.  I think we are awesome!!

Some nuts are so into the food pyramid they cant move on to the new way of thinking that not all carbs are equal.  I think you are exactly right.  I try to keep my carbs to dairy, veggies, fruit and occasional popcorn (its a veggie, right!  lol)  Crackers are empty calories, dont let her make you eat junk!

I wonder what dirty secrets she was trying to uncover. She probably thought she was being so sensitive too by using the word 'ethnic.' Did she expect your husband to confess to making you piles of fried chicken? Pigs feet? Greens? I would ask her flat out (if you have the misfortunate to meet with this mental midget again) exactly what kinds of food she is referring to. Make her answer you. Because it's messed up, and you weren't wrong to get pissed.

She also sounds flat out stupid, like she learned one meal plan for bariatric patients and will not deviate from it ever. Can you ask to work with someone else?
