It also helps people assess the information you are giving - according to where you are in your journey.  For example someone three weeks post RNY will likely have very different opinions and experience on things than me ... and sometimes it helps to gauge whether someone understands where you're coming from when you post a question...

I know I tend to be more matter of fact about early problems, because I really don't remember my early days very well so I tend to answer from a more factual and less hand holding perspective whereas someone only a few months out will likely be more empathetic ... 

I really think our surgery dates tell a lot about what to expect from us!

That works fine too, as long as the info is there if you were to ask a question. Your date of surgery is easily found. It's not about the profile, you can even mark that as private so that nobody except you can look at it. My point was to have your surgery date visible so that answers to you (or their) questions can be made based on how far in to the process you (they) are.
