OT: the breeder FINALLY has a replacement Chow puppy for me!

I had to put Khan down in mid May and have had a terrible time getting a replacement puppy under the breeder's health guarantee, despite being initially told that I was at the top of the list. (Part of the problem was an overall lack of red puppies... lots of black and cream.) At one point about a month ago, the husband literally screamed and ranted at me on the phone and then hung up on me when I confronted them about them selling a red male to someone who put in a deposit only 2 weeks before I notified them that Khan was being put down and that I would want a new puppy as soon as they had one. (The woman they sold it to happened to post about it on their Facebook page.)

Anyway, after much ado, today she emailed me and posted on my Facebook page that a litter born on the 25th had a red male that they were reserving for me!!  Khan's brother Simba is the sire (so there is some unease about the hip dysplasia issue), but I am not about to turn down this puppy since there are no other litters yet this year that might have red puppies!

He will be ready to come home on December 8th!  I *think* his name will be Augustus (Gus)... unless I think of something I like better between now and then.  I have felt so much less safe in the house since Khan has been gone, and Chow puppies are such little roly poly balls of fluff when they are small... And then there's the puppy breath...!  I really needed this pick-me-up!

Below is the pic the breeder sent.  He is three days old and, despite how it looks in the close-up picture, is about the size of an average man's hand. (There is a picture on my profile of Khan when he was a week old that shows puppy size, if anyone really cares).

Congratulations!    I have a Labradoodle puppy on order for the Spring (deposit paid but not even conceived yet ) so I get how excited you are about getting a new puppy!    Can't wait to see the pix ...

Congrats!   We currently have a 23 month old Chow/Shepard mix. He looks more Shepard than Chow however.

I remember last Spring when our Chow/Samoyed was put down it took us so long to get over looking for him.  We still miss Mufasa who was also Red. He was 90 pounds and looked like a lion.  Our dogs have always been part of the family.  They go with us everywhere.

I am happy for you and your husband and that sounds like you may have time to include the puppy on any holiday card this year too.

Wow Lora I am so happy for you! I have an 11 year old red chow mix Bo who is the best dog ever! He was so so easy to train as a pup and I hear that is because of the Chow in him, what an awesome breed! I can't wait to see pics of your new one as he grows up!

Yes, Chows are very fastidious and therefore are very easy to housebreak. They are also generally very well behaved (no excessive barking, jumping, chewing, etc.) They are also smarter than many people think. They aren't dumb, they just are very independent and aloof, and they often take commands as a question ("would you like to...?"). Excellen****ch/guard dogs. The amount of brushing required is a definite drawback, though, especially with a male with a big, thick mane.

Bo is very handsome.

Khan's brother, who sired this puppy, looked at LOT like Khan, and the mother is cream, so this puppy may look similar to Khan. I only hope he is half as affectionate.

I just realized that the picture is pretty close to (but a little larger than) life-sized, at least as it displays on my iPad.
