What am I gonna do?

My surgeon gives two options for the two week pre-op liquid diet. Optifast or Bariatric Advantage. I have tried them both in several flavors. The optifast is good but about two hours after I drink it I get "the shakes" because my blood sugar bottoms out. That is not a good feeling. The BA drinks are just shy of disgusting! Ewe! I thought for sure I would like the strawberry.....boy was I wrong. The chocolate is tolerable to some degree. The I ly thing I found that I like is Body Fortress (from Walmart). It has 26 G protein and 160 calories per serving.

What am I going to do? What did you guys drink? I just don't know if I can get these two down? I'm afraid...

Ask if you can have the Body Fortress. That is what I had for my pre-op.

Wow, that's crazy that you are only given two choices.  I got a huge list of various protein drinks I could have for my two week pre-op diet.  I went with Six Star Pro Nutrition whey isolate.  It has 30g of protein (per scoop) and 140 calories (per scoop).  I think there is like 1g of sugar, but it was on the list and tastes decent, so that's what I went with.  I really like the chocolate and the vanilla is ok, but that's all I've tried.

Does the surgeon SELL these products?  I'd be wary if he/she does.....

I really wish I could help more!!  Another product I like the taste of is Unjury.  You get it online, so I didn't go with that since I wanted to be able to run out to the store for some if I needed it.  Have only tried the chocolate of Unjury though.

Good luck!  My surgery is Monday.

Thank you for your suggestions.  Yes, the surgeon sells these products that you're supposed to use. I don't want to start this process by not following doctors orders, but these two drinks are disgusting! I actually love the taste of the body fortress, so I may just be non compliant and drink that....,

good luck on Monday!!!! :)

Yeah if they sell it, then that's most likely why they insist you use it.  I went to a different weight loss center (in the only other city in the state that does WLS) and they sold whatever it was and said I HAD to use that.  Yeah, the cost was completely prohibitive, so I just gave up!  Took me almost 4 years to even look into it again.....

Thanks for your input! I will ask at my appointment tomorrow about the body fortress. They said because the label says " protein supplement" I stead of " meal replacement" is why they want you to use their products..... But I'm a nurse with enough knowledge to compare labels and they are almost identical.....their products with Body Fortress. Not to mention the cost difference.....

honestly, the real reason they want you to use 1 of those specific protein products has more to do w/ the kickback profit your surgeon is making by selling the products.   that being said I was given a list of acceptable protein shakes that I could choose from, all of whi*****luded the list of stores where they could be purchased, my nutritionist/dietition told us the important things to look for was not only the amount of protein in each but also the amount of carbs/sugar and to keep those in the single digits @ the very least, that the lower the sugar/carbs the better.

I personally went w/ the low carb slim fast which contain 20g protein and 2g carbs/sugar , and 190 calories per 10 oz bottle I also drank them pierodically through the 7months of my preop program and during each of  my 2wk pre op/post op period,  I no longer drink them for the fact that my  program wants us taking in as much of our protein from real food sources verses shakes/powders we were told that if we were wanted to rely on the shakes/powders then why have the surgery instead of just doing something like nutra system and such.

Well, I may be crazy, but why don`t you buy the Optifast since you like it and do half half with the Body Fortress? That way you`ll enjoy the taste and be getting what you need, plus the Doctor will be happy and what he/she doesn`t know won`t hurt him/her. OR be honest, and tell him/her that you will buy it but you will HAVE to cut it with another one because you just get the "shakes." They can`t really argue with you on that. That`s what I would do. Good luck! And keep us updated!
