Post Op Must Haves
Patience... lol... seriously don't expect all the weight to come off in the first 2-3 weeks... it won't and there will be stalls too... it's all part of the journey... and it is all worth it... with that being said you will need your vitamins (multi, calcium, B12), some comfy clothes thats not tight around the waist, I used lots of chapstick for my dry lips, and something for gas (gasX strips) if your doctor allows... good luck... I hope you have an uneventful surgery :)
I needed something to read once I got home, comfy clothes, and chocolate protein powder (jay Robb) mixed with almond milk. I HATE chocolate and its the only protein I could stomach. Don't be surprised if your tastes change after surgery. I'm back to no chocolate but love other things I didn't used to care for. Good luck with your surgery!!!!

Kelly,
Congrats on your upcoming surgery! I would not stock up in bulk on anything. I have had the lapband, gastric sleeve and most recently the RNY. Each time after surgery I needed something different and I could stomach different things. I had on hand all the things I used lots of after the gastric sleeve, after I had my RNY. I didn't use most of them, but needed other things. For instance, my absolute favorite decaf hot tea is too spicy for me now. I have several boxes I just stare at whenever i open my cabinet.
That said, here are some items I needed with the sleeve:
GasX strips, tums, rolaids, my favorite chocolate protein shake, heating pad, childrens chewable tylenol, pill crusher, shaker bottles, bandages, a 5 minute timer to remind me to drink water, lots of pillows to prop myself up in bed, magazines (no attention span for novels), my laptop, and my dog.
This time with the RNY this is what I have needed (besides your liquid diet items): my laptop, my dog, flip flops for walking the hospital floor, a bra really loose with no underwire, old favorite movies I could put in and doze off watching without feeling guilty.
Also, I am a side sleeper. I have a super hard time sleeping on my back. My last two surgeries, I never got more than 2 hours of contiguous sleep because I was forced to lay on my back for the first week because of pain. So I made sure this time to immediately sleep on my side while in the hospital when I was still on heavy pain killers so my body was used to it. When I got home, even without pain killers, I was still able to sleep on my side. Your mileage may vary. Good luck to you!

I like the suggestion not to stock up on anything - your taste perception will almost definitely change. After surgery, juice was too sweet, broth tasted vile, protein shakes/water made me sick, and the only thing I could stomach during my full liquids phase was instant sugar free/fat free pudding made by mixing unflavored protein powder with skim milk before mixing.
In the hospital I needed slipper socks for walking, and a non-petroleum based lip balm. As soon as I got home, I needed patience, water, television, lots of sleep, and someone to help me out for the first couple of days. I didn't have gas pain because I had an open surgery, but you might need Gas-x strips. You'll need to do lots of walking (it really helps). In the beginning your needs will be super simple and a lot of what you'll end up using will be a matter of trial and error. Just be kind to yourself!
Congrats on your surgery date!

I only took had Atkins chocolate shakes when I came home and I cant stand chocolate....I was in love with it before surgery. My tastes have change so drastically all I can stomach is non sweet things. I have a lot of trouble with any kind of shake. I took chapstick and a book to the hospital because they have gowns and I didnt want to get mine all yucky. Congrats!
Congrats on your surgery date!
I did some pj for the hospital but used their gowns- use two of them one open in the front and one in the back.
Personals-
I used burts bee for lips. Chapstick tends to dry out my lips. I also made sure I had warm socks and slippers for the hospital and home. ( my feet are always cold). I had a small half pillow as I like to sleep on my side but needed support. Skin lotion for dry skin. I took baby wipes and toothpaste to the hospital and glad I did. I keep a warm blanket downstairs with a pillow when I was resting in the living room.
Entertainment-
I am not much of a tv watcher so I stocked up on all 3 books of the Fifty Shades of Grey series.
I wished I had some older magazines to read. Ask friends if they have any old ones you can read. We did rent a couple of movies from red box the first couple of weeks for family time.
Food/Protein Supplies-
My water bottle has ounces on the side to help me keep track.
I either use a braun or a mixing bottle with metal ball to shake up my protein shakes.
I know we can drink Crystal Light but I didn't have a taste for it. I have been drinking a lot of water with lemon and lime juice in them. I also bought some decaf tea bags as I like the taste of unsweetend ice tea. I had surgery the end of August so the weather was warm still. I did stock up on some broth in the house. I did eat the zero point WW soup the first couple of weeks. I used the veggies but didn't eat them. Now the weather is starting to turn to fall I am starting to crave some hot tea. I did buy some SF flavors to add to my protein shake starting wk 3. You can find them online or down the coffee aisle of your store. I have SF Carmel and SF Raspberry now and will need to buy the SF Mint online. Two good brands are Divinci and Torani. If you want to sample them first. Check with a latte stand and see if you can buy some small amounts of a couple of flavors.
For protein shake flavors everyone is different but I have Choc and Vanilla. Then I can also make Raspberry. I can also make Carmel and I can make Choc with Carmel flavor. I also do vanilla with carmel flavor and pumpkin spice.
I did go out and get a massage and my eye brows waxed last week and feel much better.
I did stock up on some food for my family that I could make in the crock pot because I didn't feel like cooking for them. I also stocked up on the normal Costco stuff TP, paper towels, lunch stuff for them as they were heading back to school.

What a great question... My surgery date is the 19th and I'm slowly putting together what I need for the hospital. I'm a little anxious as I'm a nurse and will be staying in the same hospital I work at. The very thought makes me cringe....
I also had someone suggest Biotene it is a dry mouth spray, it works very well and is really useful while in the hospital.
Good Luck!!!!
