I am a little over 2 weeks out of surgery and have only been on "soft" foods since last Thursday.  I try and I try but the most protein I get is about 50 g a day.  Did you all just dive right in and get 70g right away or was it something you worked up to? I'm so conscious of making sure I get in at least 64oz of water, that I forget food (which TOTALLY amazes me BTW).  I'm waiting for my sugar free syrups to try to make protein shakes cause right now they are yuck! Just wondering if I'm way behind or 50g for the first week on "soft" foods isn't bad.

Thanks for your help!

Dina

It took me a week or two to get my protein to 60gm/d so I think you're on track from my experience.

Good luck,

The often accepted program is 30g at 30 days, 60g at 60 days and 90g at 90 days!   Expecting people to get their lifelong daily protein requirements from the get-go seems to be rather ambitious!

Most of us have a good protein store before surgery and so are able to NOT become protein deficient on the above regime ...

You are doing just fine.

Dina, I will be 4 weeks out tomorrow and I am still having a hard time getting in my protein!! I have been trying all kinds of different protein powders and I just can't stand them!  Greek yogurt is the only thing that I can handle right now.  I just hope it get's better.  I do get my water in no trouble... Good luck!

Almost everyone has to work up to it.  I was ale to get 60g (my surgeon's minimum) from the very beginning, but only because I had a G-tube in my remnant stomach into which I could put protein shakes or protein water that I did not like!

Don't worry, you are doing fine.

Dina,

It takes a while to ramp up to the protein levels that are prescribed. The doctors and RD's are aware of that and generally want you to work up to the prescribed protein allotment. I personally think that 50grams of protein is great for someone who is just a couple of weeks post op.

Regarding the sugar free syrups. You can often find them at the local grocery store in the coffee aisle. Maybe picking up one or two until your shipment arrive will help you attain a higher level of protein.

Keep up the good work,

I am so glad I'm not alone on this.  It has been a terrible struggle.  Any day I get close to 50gms  I feel miserable.  I've been worried and struggling with this since my surgery 4 weeks ago.

I haven't had my surgery yet, so I'm not speaking from experience there.

However, I have a stock of Unjury protein in my closet which I take each morning and whenever I get a craving for sweets in the evening.  I use skim milk with either the chocolate or the vanilla.

Some tell me that after surgery these will be too sweet...?  Maybe.

Unjury also carries unflavored protein but I've been too chicken to try it.  Anyway, you can contact them for some samples.  You have to pay for the samples (I think they're 99 cents each).

Another good tasting protein is Chike.  You can get free samples from them and they have vitamins already included in the powder.  Again, I just mix with skim milk.

I've also heard recently of another very good tasting protein called Click.  I haven't tried it yet, but it's gotten rave reviews!

In the meantime, it sounds like you're on the right track.  My nutritionist told me that it's usual to have to build up to the 60 grams of protein.  I'm more concerned about getting all that H2O in. https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/561619_101511452 17393329_806667427_n.jpg

Wow Dina,

You're doing great. I'm 2 wks out too but I was only able to get to about 30 g's today. I can't imagine eating 50 g's at this point. I'm impressed.

I was struggling till about 3 days ago when I finally found the protein that I could stand.  As soon as I found something, then I was able to get 70 in.
