I am having trouble deciding between the Gastric Sleeve vs the Bypass. I was def getting the sleeve till I talked to the doctor. N he sed about the bypass wud b a better route for me. My BMI is over 50. So I keep going in between but I need to figure it out before we set a date. I have my endoscopy on 10/03/12. Any advice please?

Your doctor has seen many patients and their outcomes. I would ask him about long term outcomes and odds. It may be worth it to talk to a  second surgeon who does WLS and get his opinion as well.

I think in the long run you can fail with either surgery. Talk to them about failure rates.

My research I found the sleeve is much safer. But from what I'm hearing others telling me I wont reach my goal of 150 lbs. But the bypass I will. But I seen ppl with complications. N looked either sickly or older from losing so much weight to fast. This is what I'm stuck on.

RNY data indicates higher percentage of loss of excess body wt compared to sleeve: about 85% to 60/65%.  If you're diabetic, that may be one of the decididing factors for your sureon'g recommendation.  There is a lot more long range data on health from RNY than sleeve too.  DAVE

I originally had the sleeve done may 9,2012. Had many complications. Got so sick I had to have a PICC line with TPN for 2 months. Got a second opinion and only way to "fix" me was to do a revision to RNY. I wish I had seen the second surgeon in the first place because I would not have had a sleeve! I would be happy to discuss more with you if you would like.

 Hi,

I've never heard of the sleeve causing something that a RNY would fix.
