Restoril?
Just FYI for anyone who is not aware, these are both tricyclic antidepressants (that often have drowsiness as one of he side effects) and therefore cannot generally be used by people on other antidepressants (well, the MAOIs (I don't think many doctors use these anymore) and SSRIs (Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro, Prozac) anyway... I am not sure about the SNRIs like Cymbalta and Effexor).

Ah, so I am not alone. I will be going to my PCP for something, I was thinking lunesta. This is very difficult for me because I work 12 hour night shifts. I work tomorrow night so I will be up almost all night so that I can sleep during the day before work tomorrow. Even then (not having sleep in almost 24 hours) I will need to take some benadryl in the morning, and still not get to bed until 11 or 12 noon. I can relate and insomnia sucks! Keep us posted on the new med and how it works for you!
It worked amazingly well. I had NINE HOURS of uninterrupted sleep, and if I had not seen that it was time to get up for work, I probably would have gone back to sleep! I cannot even remember the last time I slept for nine hours, even taking pain meds! I'm not sure the 30mg dose is necessary, but for now I will take it and be grateful for the sleep after so many days, weeks, months of less than 5 hours every night and some nights of 3 hours or less.

You weren't kidding, Deb! He gave me the 30mg (generic) capsules (I assume that he gave me the high dose because so many other things had already failed). At 9pm I got a glass of water, sat in my LaZBoy, took the pill, and started watching tv. I don't remember ever feeling at all sleepy, but the next thing I knew I was waking up feeling a little stiffness in my neck, and when I looked at the clock it was 6:05am!! It must have hit FAST since, as I said, I don't remember feeling at all drowsy and I only remember just a couple of minutes of the show.
FINALLY, I think we have a winner! Thank heavens!

Dang, SO glad I'm not the only one here with horrid sleep problems!. My doc tried Tenazipam...which I LOVED but it's only a 10 day treatment I guess. Well, it didnt work and I'm on trazodone now - I love it actually but what still works best is goofy Nyquil - only take it when I'm sick though.

There is nothing inherent in the tanazepam (the generic name for Restoril) that limits it to 10 days. It is, howver, like a number of other anti-anxiety and hypnotic meds (Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, Rohypnol, Valium, etc.) a benzodiazepine, and all benzo's have the potential for addiction.
My script for the Restoril/tenazepam is for 60 days (30 of the 30mg (highest dose) with one refill).
Glad the Trazadone is working for you, though. I was not excited about trying it in the first place, so was not terribly disappointed that it made me throw up within minutes of taking it. It is primarily an antidepressant but is also sometimes used for insomnia and treatment of schizophrenia (when there is particularly disturbed thinking). The side effects can be significant, and -- unlike most meds -- can start at any time even if you did not have an initial reaction to it, so be sure to report anything new to your doc (especially any related to trouble thinking, chest heaviness or discomfort, digestive trouble, or issues with your extremities such as muscle twitching, numbness, burning, or tingling).
