Question about Order of Foods
I know every Doctor is Different, but was just wondering what your schedule or Oder of foods was. I had surgery on Monday and I will be on clear liquids until next Thursday when I go in for my follow up. Do you get to do soft foods after that? Puree foods? Still liquids? Just wondering what was your plan.
Thanks!

Didn't they tell you about your post op meal plan before your surgery? Or give you written information?
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
The general order is clear liquids, full liquids, purées, soft foods, then full foods (although some hard to digest foods will still be off-limits for a while after all other foods are permitted).
The difference isn't the ORDER of the stages, but the length of them. Some sugeons have a VERY short time period for certain stages (I was on clear liquids only one day and full liquids only one day) and skips some stages altogether (I had no puréed stage, reqlly... It was only one meal long... I went from full liquids to being allowed pudding and yogurt for dinner one night and then was allowed soft foods the following morning). I came home on Day Four already eating oatmeal and scrambled eggs.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
No I didn't get any of this post operative. My Doctor likes to do things 1 week at a time, he like when I come in, he checks on me, and then I get my "walking" orders for the next week. When I left the hospital, the information i received was "Clear liquids until follow up appointment" which is this Thursday. I'm not complaining...I kind of like that he gives me one thing to concentrate on. I have to admit, I'm longing to "taste" something. I have been on clear liquids since last Saturday..lol Thanks for your response! I want something to look forward to until Thursday..lol
i left the hospital on liquid, then went to puree at my one week, then went to soft like 3-4 weeks later, then went to regular like 3-4 weeks after that.

The clinic I attend literally gave me a three ring binder (that the NUT reviewed with me) outlining every step of the diet. I started on liquid, full liquid, soft foods, then regular.
It was also helpful because they had all the common side effect so I was forewarned about the hair loss, dumping, etc. Too bad your folks don't do something like that. It was helpful to me and invaluable to my husband. He's definitely taken on the role of the "enforcer". LOL

While in the hospital--the day after surgery, I was on clear liquids. Then I advanced to soft foods (pudding only)/shakes the following day. Once home, I was on an hourly schedule, alternating between protein shakes and clear liquids(10am-protein shake, 11am-clear liquids, 12pm-protein shake, etc.). After two weeks of that, I was cleared for soft foods--yogurt, ricotta, cottage cheese, moist lunch meats, etc. After one week of that, I was cleared for a regular diet. Protein is #1, though.
You'll progress to each stage as you can tolerate it. If you get sick on something, go back to full liquids for 24 hours, and try that food in a few weeks. Hopefully, your surgeon will give you more guidance.

I was given what the rn at the surgeons office called my bible (wtf?) and it says to start pureed foods on the 3rd day....you read it right. I was in hospital for 5 days so I was on the hospitals version of a clear liquid the whole time. The instructions on discharge were for full liquids when I came home. When I saw my surgeon the next week my NUt was ticked because I was still on it. She was emphatic that I be on pureed foods. I waited a couple of days and started the pureed but I have had nothing but pain since. Evey article and university website I have visited forbids pureed foods until week 4 so Idk if I can trust these people or not. Anyway my "bible" states that weeks 5-6 I can add crackers and cheese, fish, hamburger, chicken moist, beans, bananas, dry cereals and baked potatos. Weeks 7-8 add fruits packed in natural juices, stews, lunchmeat and so forth. Does anyone else think this diet is pushing it???
