Does it mean anything when you have an intense craving for salt?

Salt craving may have common causes including:
  • Addison’s disease (decreased production of hormones by the adrenal glands)
  • Dehydration (loss of body fluids and electrolytes, which can be life threatening when severe and untreated)
  • Electrolyte imbalance
  • Pregnancy

When I started craving salt it was (in my non-professional opinion) electrolyte imbalance. I don't add salt to food or eat much processed stuff - all I was drinking was water, skim milk (protein shakes), and I was sweating like a race horse in July.
When I had a tomato slice and put a dash of salt on it I thought I had died and gone to Heaven! Now I have some Powerade Zero on occasion and add tads of salt on occasion to my food.
Helped my dizzy spells for the most part, as well.

I'm almost three weeks out and am craving salt badly. I loaded my boiled egg with it for my lunch. I hope I'm not getting dehydrated....

Adrenal deficiencies.
Low BP - due to adrenal deficiencies
low mineral levels - watch for muscle spasms - if I crave salt but don't get enough - I may end up with muscle twitching - or spasms. Almost always.

I crave salt even more than sugar during this month's cycle. Now that's whack. But I'll take all the help I can get with my sugar addiction. PMS makes it so hard. But while a Milky Way sounds good, a salt lick on a wheel sounds better.

Except after eating all this salt I feel like the Hoover dam.

I LOVE salt. I know its bad but if you can't have sugar or fat what's left?  Just salt!

I've always loved salt and sometimes had intense cravings for it that never made sense to me.

Then in my early 30's I ended up needing some pretty thorough labs and I found out I was sodium deficient. Turns out I crave salt because for some reason my body doesn't retain it. All of my labs show consistent low sodium, to the point where last year the doc told me I would have to take sodium pills if I couldn't keep my levels up (nope-I had never heard of that before either).

So I indulge my salt cravings - and yep, I crave weird stuff. Like dill pickle juice. And I love, love, love Kalamata olives. I could eat a whole jar of those in one setting if I allowed myself.

I know you're up on your labs, is your sodium low? It could show in the normal range and still be at a low for you personally.

Good luck figuring it out - and please let us know what, if anything, it turns out to be.=)
