Does it mean anything when you have an intense craving for salt?
I mean I am a salty girl but the last few days I have had an INSATIABLE desire for salt. For the most part I resist but today I cut up some tomatoes and put them in fish sauce (Asian liquid condiment that is VERY salty) for a dish I'm making later and I took a spoonful and it was like my friggin soul sighed. Now any other time it would have been way too salty for even my tastes.

It could be pica, which usually indicates low iron. I've been a salt ***** since surgery. I figure it's because I was avoiding additional salt for a long time pre-op. It has toned down in the past week, though.
Yeah, if that happened I'd be a scientific anamoly...

I was reading somewhere that an American diet includes a lot of salt due to the quantity of commercial baked goods that most people eat, since those are absolutely loaded with salt. Most of us as post ops avoid those items, so we don't get nearly the amount of salt our countrymen and -women do.
Some salt is necessary, as I know you know. Could it be you are just low on sodium? I was eating very low sodium and got some intense salt cravings, especially mid month of the wimmen time cycle. Could this be it for you?

I read somewhere that it is normal for women to crave salt for a few physical reasons (as mentioned above)... dehydration, illness, adrenal exhaustion, mineral deficiency or electrolyte imbalance and yes even pregnancy. If using some salt in your diet doesn't cure the craving a trip to your PCP might be in order to make sure everything is everything!
I CRAVE salt like crazy... I have for months now... I even salt my frozen meal even though my co-workers are shaking their "no-no" fingers at me I can't help it... I try so hard not to add any additional salt but sometimes its just too much and I cave... I'm coming up on my 18 months check up and I plan on asking if there is a reason for it.
