Just wondering

OK, I had RNY in March 2012 this year. I am loosing regularly still.
Last night I had about 6 Oz baked ham, some regular mustard on that. Had maybe two spoon fulls of mac and cheese and maybe 6Oz of a baked tater with cheese, light SC and margarine on it.

Afterwords I felt very light headed and I knew I should not have had any of the tater at all. This morning I had my normal bacon and fried eggs and again, I feel like my energy level went down and I feel light headed. Can I be dumping on fat from the bacon? I know I am now lactose intolerant but I have done fine with cheese before and I even took some lactiade.

Just wondering what you guys think about what I am eating and how eating regular food seems to be making me sick. I wonder if I should eat less of that and just stick with more of protein shake.

It's not my stomach / pouch that feel abused, it's feeling dizzy and lack of energy after eating.

Update, my wife is really really mad at me right now saying that anytime I am free around her that I say I am sick and sleep. It's not that way at all and I really try hard to wade on her hand and foot. I got up after only getting five hours sleep and made her dinner. I almost always cook her breakfast so she does not have to get fast food some where down the road.

I think yes! I had surgery in April this year and both of those meals would put me in the bed. Even though your pouch can tolerate it the fat on it is making you dump. Try foods that are a little less fatty. Lean meats and lots of veggies make me feel the best! One thing I noticed as I get further out is that some things that I had in the beginning, like mash potatoes, didn't make me feel bad, but now I cannot eat them. I think because at first it was such a small portion it was not causing the dumping.

Doesn't sound like dumping, if feeling lightheaded and tired was the only symptoms.  But you might be reacting to the fat.  Last night, I guess it was low blood sugar from all the carbs.  But I don't know about this morning.

I would try eating smaller amounts of regular food and make sure youe at regularly.  If you've only been doing three meals a day, I would try eating smaller meals but adding snacks.

If it continues, though, I'd talk to your doc.

Potatoes AND Mac and cheese is double white carbs - what you experienced is what we refer to as a carb coma - the need to sleep off the excess!!!! These are not good dietary choices. Sweet potato is a better alternative or something wholegrain which the body will find easier to cope with!

Bacon and fried eggs shouldn't have the same effect, but it would certainly slide right on through MY digestive tract!!! Maybe you could try poaching, scrambling or boiling the eggs to keep your fat intake at a good level and maybe prevent the lethargy?

To the previous poster: you can only dump on sugar (anything with -ose) or a sugar derivative. Dumping doesn't make you feel tired - it makes you feel like you are dying!!! Sweating, heart racing, confusion - I can't even answer questions or have a conversation when I am dumping - it is very very scarey!

Hmmm, well I'm still learning but I do get the the shakes and rapid heart beat after eating loaded baked potatoes and white bread. So then its not dumping that I feel after eating the fatty foods ? cause I do have that sick lethargic feeling when I eat those foods too? Either way I know that the healthy whole foods make me feell better, so I try and just stick to eating them rather than the other stuff. Thanks for the info.

I was going to say it sounds like your blood sugar level dropped. At least that's what it sounds like to me anyways.

I'm thinking it might have been the carbs.  You said mac & cheese and tatters ... the pasta and the tatters, that seems like a lot.  I'm just 4 weeks out and I've been able to eat bacon and cheese with no issues but actually dumped on cream of wheat (which the clinic recommended when I was on the full fluids stage.)

I've kind of become a little carb-phobic since then although I've had no troubles with having 4 Ritz crackers with lunch.

last night sounds like RH to me. I've had it for years pre surgery and that much carbs would do it to me. I eat it and within 30 min to an hour I'd have to sleep I felt like I had narcalepsy

The carbs appear to be causing your sugar to drop.  I'd work on eating more complex carbs instead of the simple carbs.

Not sure why the bacon and egg would cause it.  You might want to get a meter to check your sugar levels.
