Random Poll o' the Week: Down in the dumps...
Three days post op I was still on clear liquids. My NUT said to have some apple juice on hand to be diluted 50/50 with water in case my blood sugar dropped. I felt the need to have a little and shortly afterward I felt I was gonna die. My husband started patting me down thinking I had a blood clot in my legs. I have no idea what would give him THAt idea. My heart was racing, I was really hot and nauseated, and just felt AWFUL.
Since then, I have not had such a bad reaction, but have had times when what I've eaten didn't work well for me and I got some of the symptoms (either racing heart rate or nausea or feeling yucky, but not all at once). I don't **think** fats bother me, as I've had full fat creamy soup (by mistake) and regular cheeses with no problems.

I do dump, but it takes a lot of sugar to make it happen.
The Christmas after my surgery (I was 4 months out), I ate a small amount (like 3 bites) of the filling from a pumpkin pie. I had done the same at Thanksgiving when I was only 3 months out and had no problem. Within minutes of eating the pie filling at Christmas, however, I went into a full-blown dumping episode. I failed to consider that the pie we had a Thanksgiving was one that someone got from the grocery bakery and the one we had at Christmas was a Marie Callendar's pie which has MUCH more sugar and fat than your average pumpkin pie.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

Well, I had a dumping incident in the hospital when I dran**** water and accidentally swallowed some ice. I just noticed though that my carnation breakfast drink isnt sugar free and I have used it since day 5 post-op. I dont know if it gets diluted by the milk and other things in my shake but I havent had dumping with it. Chili gave it to me one day even though it was pureed (yes its on my meal plan). So I'll will see with time I guess, although I am not intentionally gonna test it.
I haven't tested or really consume sugar to know.
And it bugs me too, for whatever reason, to hear people say they dump on tons of stuff. It's a specific reaction to sugar. I knew about it long before RNY because we were taught it in regards to my sons surgery. anyone with stomach surgery can dump.

I'm not sure yet as I'm only 3 weeks out but probably not ...I have an allergy to aspartame and sugar alcohols dint sit well since the surgery (can you say gas from hell). I eat yogurt and it has sugar (not allot) and no problem . Also in my tea (no a daily thing ...yet until the cold weather comes) but I have a tea spoon of sugar in it and no issue yet.
It takes A LOT- and with baked goods like cinnamon rolls or coffee cake being my thing, i fight the good fight all the time.
Sugared candies won't but if it's a rich sweet like the cinnamon roll has homemade buttercrem frosting or something it expedites it. And presweentened yogurt usually gets me. And sugary cereal with cows milk. Honestly this past Sunday night I got so sick I literally cried. I couldn't even go to sleep. The culprit? Apple bran muffin with a sugar glaze.

Be happy.
I wasn't planning on finding out. I had already decided that whether or not I dumped wasn't important, I just cannot handle sugar in any way, shape or form. Several months out I made my protein shake and about 1/2 an hour later I wanted to die. Since I had heard that was a sign of dumping I knew I had accidentally gotten some sugar in me. After I felt better, about 30 minutes later, I checked the syrup and discovered it wasn't sugar free. I learned I better be more aware but a few months later the same thing happened and as soon as I was able to I checked everything I put in the shake and found that I had bout regular pudding instead of sugar free. In all fairness, though, if you have ever seen the boxes of Great Value pudding at Walmart they are very similar.
For a while I would dump from too many carbs or sugar alcohol, not terribly but enough to not be comfortable. That seems to have gotten a lot better lately. I can't remember the last time I dumped but I have felt like I was close to it a few times when I have had my sugar free hot fudge sundae at night. I have learned the exact amount I can tolerate before it makes me feel bad. But all in all I tolerate things a lot better then I did in the first year. I have no problems at all with fats although I have barely had anything fried, just a few fries here or there, but I use full fat in most everything without a problem.
The same thing with the reactive hypoglycemia. I went through a period where I had it nearly ever day or so and then they stopped for several months and then a few weeks ago I had another attack. It is strange how inconsistent it seems to be. It could be because I have been eating every 2 or 3 hours for a while.
