Can we absorb GEL caps? 2yrs post Op

I think maybe it just depends on the person. I had low vitamin D and took a teeny tiny little Vitamin D-3 gel cap daily and had it up to 90 where the reference is 20-50 at my lab. They freaked at my pre-op RNY visit. So was off of it. My vitamin D level edged down to low again in the process and I didn't take it for 8 weeks after surgery. Then I started again with the teeny tiny gel cap in late July and by by labs 08/23/2012 the D was back up to 78.3. So now I am taking it every other day. But the point is, i seem to absorb it just fine and dandy from a gel cap. Affordable gel cap from Costco at that.
According to the LInus Pauling Institute, we actually need our vitamin D to be at least 80. Otherwise, we are at increased risk for stuff like osteoporosis, heart disease and some kinds of cancer. So if yours was 78.3, I would not cut back on how often you take it.

Thanks! I will add it back. I should print some of that site and take it to my surgeon I guess. It's kind of frustrating really. He and the team at the UW Bariatric Center have some definite opinions but then when you question them about specifics they turn around and tell you to speak to your PCP about it. It is all I can do not to say, "Dude, you are the one who bypassed my stomach, shouldn't you be the one to prescribe the aftercare?" but I just am polite and go to my PCP. LOL I hope you have a wonderful day Kelly!
