OT (maybe not?) - Here Comes Honey Boo Boo

Oh don't get me wrong, I enjoy the show. Like I said, they make me feel better about my family!

And Alana seems like a sweet kid with a bit of country AND a bit of ghetto in her.

But the parts where the mom starts making those remarks about her looks. I just remember doing that. And it's sort of uncomfortable for me to watch. Hell, she may be sincere in her thoughts and maybe I'm the one with all the hang-ups. Entirely possible!

And see....I never noticed the comments the mom makes about herself or the fact that they are all overweight.  I mean I SEE it...but I never really focused on it or analyzed it in any way.  I think they are HILARIOUS and I know quite a few country bumpkins/rednecks (myself included) and I guess because I can see they are playing up somethings...but a lot of it they are not and well....they are just HILARIOUS to me.  I don't particularly think they are ignorant but they live a very different life than mine (though I know and grew up with people VERY similar to them) and seeing how they approach things is funny.  Doesn't make my approach better and there's worse...just different.

They seem like a happy family (although we all know looks can be deceiving) and I think this show is their change to ham it up a bit.  They are harmless and I'm enjoying the peek into their lives.

I think it's disgusting that the network should put this people in the position of being ridiculed all over the world, and worse, that they should let themselves be treated this way.

My entire family is from the South, and none of them would behave in the ignorant fashion that is encouraged by the writers of this "show".

I hope the money makes up for it....

C'mon people.....it's all about the money for the family (think Jon and Kate Plus 8) and the over the top antics that make i****chable for those of us that tune in!!! I'm sure there are families out there in all areas of the country that truly act this way.....it's not geographically specific. I think this show is a hoot, some mindless entertainment. Just like Toddlers and Tiaras, Dance Moms, Little Couple, Biggest Loser, Big Brother, Hell's Kitchen etc. Take it for what it's worth.....Side note Honey Boo Boo beat the Republican Convention on the night they both aired....not quite sure what that says.....hmmmmmmmm!!

It says we're all going to hell, LOL!

I agree that it is mindless entertainment. That's the problem. Mindless entertainment finds its way into our lexicon and our culture and it gets embedded. This is why we are currently living in a world with unrealistic body expectations courtesy of the Barbie doll!

This stuff becomes normal to us and we internalize it. Popular culture has a big role in how we think about ourselves and the world around us. So I think it's important to enjoy the entertainment value but also recognize WHY this is entertaining. Comedy is usually embedded in truth. If this show is our truth, frankly, I worry for the future!

I've only seen outtakes but the only thing I thought of was how pissed off the other pageant moms must be that this one got a show.

Yelp my thoughts as well!  Those other moms try so hard to be perfect for the camera and here comes this woman and she and Honey Boo Boo steal the show.  I LOVE it!

I was so grossly appaled by the previews for that show that I've never seen a single episode. Although I'm tempted, I'll admit. Especially once Mama's neck-crust issue came to light. Nothing to raise your self esteem than the realization that somewhere out there, people who are not you are walking around with crusty necks.

Anyway, one scene did give me a little hope and came off as almost endearing. The scene in the show's preview where the whole family is on the couch doing the truffle shuffle with their bellies, and Honey Boo Boo is all wide-mouthed and grinning, looking around at everyone like it's damn Christmas morning, It was in that very expression that I saw her for what she should be--a happy, joyful child who finds a little thrill in very simple (if somewhat gross and socially awkward) things. And that was sweet.

By the by, does anyone remember when TLC actually stood for The Learning Channel?  Yeah.

I saw about half and episode on The Ludicrous Chanel and could not bear one more minute and had to turn it off in disgust.
