OT (maybe not?) - Here Comes Honey Boo Boo

So in TLC's strategy of "making your family look better by showing an even more whacked out family than YOUR whacked out family" they are offering "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo."

I watched two shows and frankly the show bugs me a bit. Namely:

1. "Mama": Yeah. That chick makes one more self-deprecating remark and laughs it off and I'm gonna scream. IF I believed you truly loved your "three chins" (her words, not mine) and all the rest of it, I'd be as happy for you as you PRETEND to be for yourself. But yeah. I don't buy it. 

2. Does Honey Boo-Boo eat anything besides cheese puffs? I know June (Mama) is an extreme couponer but I'm sure there are healthier snacks you can buy your child. Seriously. Give yourself a quarter for every time you see a bazooka container of cheese puffs on that show and you'll be well on your way with your plastics funds, friends!

3. I'm conflicted about whether I should be concerned or endeared that Alana (Honey Boo Boo) has made her gut into a character that speaks to the camera. On the one hand it may reflect some of her mother's indifference to what she eats or how she treats her body. But on the other, it may just be self-acceptance. My head may explode.

4. Is the 14 year old REALLY ok with being publicly nicknamed "Chubbs" and having her mom call her "Chubette" on national television? Really? 

I don't even KNOW where to start with them. But everything you said is a good start to what bugs me.

Although I don't like the show I have to say there are worse things that people will do to get on TV.
But yes - her "gut" that speaks to the camera is just about sad! Where is Michelle Obama on this one?

They are rather shocking in the way they talk and act towards each other, but there does seem to be a lot of love and they actually seem to be happy!

 Oh I don't doubt the love. And I like how much June believes in Alana. And Alana is cute although I feel like her "red-neckdedness" is being exploited just a bit (and she has just a dash of ghetto in her...where'd that come from???")

The family is likeable. But I always come up against this conflict of when I see people with unhealthful attitudes (not just size/eating but in general) being highlighted. It's like are we exploiting them or are they exploiting themselves. Are they having fun or is the joke on them? I just wonder.

I honestly can't say who is exploiting who, but I try to watch this in the vein that they are enjoying playing up their redneckness (!) - no one gets these reality shows without some drama to keep us all entertained - and I do think this family know EXACTLY what they are doing!!!

I hope they make enough money to compensate for the noteriety and derision from some to be worth it.

It surprised me how much I liked them!

I enjoy some aspects of the show. Other aspects are cringe-worthy to me.

Nik, I've never seen the show. The title of your post caught my attention and I just had to see what it was about.
