Question for newer folks or those with a good amount of restriction
Do you determine you’ve had enough to eat by:
a)Your sense of satisfaction or fullness or
b) By how much of something you think you are supposed to eat?
For instance, if your surgeon told you your meals are supposed to be…say…15g protein and about ¼ c. (just random measurements) and you make a meal that fits with that but you take two bites and are full, do you:
a) Save the rest for another meal
b) Wait a little while and resume your meal until full again, repeat until finished meal
I ask because that’s one of the biggest contradictions I see with people I know who had WLS. Their surgeon will give requirements for amounts of stuff in food but then tell them to only eat until satisfied, which doesn’t usually result in them eating the meal that the surgeon prescribed. A friend asked me how to handle that. I said I haz nooooo idea!
What say you?
RNY Gastric Bypass 1-8-08 350/327/200 (HW/SW/CW). I spend most of my time playing with my food over at Bariatric Foodie - check me out!
In the early stages -- I measured AND ate until full. Often I was full well before the meal was done, but I didn't care, since it meant more weight loss.
Later -- I simply ate until full. I still do - depending on the food TYPE. It takes a lot more to fill me up -- but I know my limits.
Right now, I feel I'm more in the measuring mindset, and I do feel full from what I did eat. Not overly stuffed like pre-op--just comfortable. I'm sure if I had a full 4oz. of food, I probably would have had some left over. I know I'll be healing for some time, but it I can keep portion sizes in check, then it shouldn't be much trouble.
There are times I eat and say hmm that wasn't enough so I continue to eat then when chewing what ends up being my final bite I am hit with that "If you chew anymore or even attempt to swallow I will make you vomit" feeling from my pouch

That feeling is aweful. I can tell most of the time when chewing if that bite is going in or not (and yes I've spit food out instead of trying to swallow it). I'm not one that throws up post-WLS but geez that full feeling is something I don't like experiencing.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!
I'm 5 days post op and I can't really tell the difference between being full when I eat (full liquids) or gas or pain. I stop eating when I feel that tight feeling creeping up on me when eating or drinking. I'm having a hard time getting 32ozs of liquids down. The proteins are definitely under 60g. I try to resume the meal but sometime that's not possible.
I am so thankful for this surgery, this tool, but I just want to do this correctly so as not to injure myself or halt the healing process.
