If I am running at home, I still hear my trainer. There have been a couple of times we trained outside, or she came back for me at a 5k to run with me. She is so in my head I can't get away from hearing "You are NOT going QUIT now are you? Just a few steps away?" then of course she sets a new goal (the next mailbox- pass the lady in the pink shorts, etc)

Having goals is what motivates me to not sleep through my alarm in the morning. This fall I'm running Warrior Dash for St. Jude's Childrens Hospital, an 8k run for Northern Virginia Literacy Council, and a 5k run at AIDS Walk Washington for Whitman-Walker Clinic.

The race fees are my way of giving back to the community while doing something healthy for myself at the same time. Every day that I don't want to get up and work out, I think about the people who need the services that those organizations provide.

I use more personal goals as well. I wanted to be able to lift more than my weight by our wedding in June and was so proud of myself when I made it. My next lifting goal is to get my dead lift to 200 lbs.

And I totally agree with thinking about other things / listening to good tunes. Just don't do what I did and zone out while running on a trail at a Civil War fort, trip on a tree root, and fly like Superman...then land with a thud. Miss Grace I am not.

 On a total serious note!

I now only use music if I am indoors on the trainer, hamster wheel or a spin bike.

Try ditching the tunes when you do your next outdoor run and listen to all the sounds your body makes.  I have ran some of my fastest times and some of my slowest times without music.  My fasest times are when I am paying attention and listening to my breathing and my heart and going at a pace not dictated by music.

When I run I always have great tunes.  Then, I mentally put together cute outfits in my head with the stuff in my closet..and I realize that in order to be able to wear all those cute outfits, I have to stay the same size.

The 324 lb woman is always nipping at my heels and that keeps me moving.  When it is so hard I just want to quit, I remember all the people less fortunate than me-the crippled, injured, sick...that would trade places with me in a hot minute if they could....and I do it for them.

When I'm feeling tapped out, hitting a wall, and just like I can't go one step further, lift one more rep, or do one more second of an interval, I hear a fairly loud voice speak authoritatively from deep within me that says "to the warrior victory, to the victim excuses." That usually pushes me to achieve my goal for that workout. Plus, strong is the new skinny!
