How Long after surgery can you have coffee?

And did it upset your pouch. I love coffee , I worry about not having it as im prone to migraines and this will set one off not having any , so I would guess in the hospital even if ic ould have it i probably wont feel like it. Thoughts?

My Dr had us wait 3 months.   I did not have any problem at all once I drank it again

It will be on your doctor's protocol lists of things you can and cannot have.  No caffeine right after surgery for most people because it's a natural diuretic, and they don't want you to get dehydrated.  You are going to have enough problems getting liquids in so that is why no caffeine.  they recommend you weening yourself before surgery from coffee because of the headache issue.  I am just now able to stand the taste of coffee and I am at almost 4 months.  I couldn't even gag decaf.  Your taste buds after surgery get out of wack and everything can taste metallic, odd or too sweet.   Jane

what about decaf?

My Dr. allowed decaf coffee and tea from day 1.

  I have had coffee from about the time I went off mushies and did not have as big a risk of dehydrating. It is on my Doctors no list but we talked about it and he gave me a pass. I don't drink milk so my compromise is 8 oz coffee and 8 oz. 1% milk. Sort of cafe latte style. Not my old brew but still very good. 

 I still stay away from very bold, strong coffees like french roasts. They don't (soften) as much with the milk. Not worth making my pouch mad. 

 The idea that caffeine is a diuretic has been recently disproven by the Mayo Clinic.  Us caffeine drinkers need to spread the word, because normal caffeine usage is not something that dehydrates you.  The Mayo Clinic's study showed that excessive (I think it's 6+ cups) can cause a slight diuretic function.

I've been drinking coffee since I was on liquids post-op.

 My doctor's protocols say decaf, and when I'm further out, I can have 1 cup of regular coffee then decaf for the rest of the day. 

Honestly, I'd just be using regular coffee for constipation since it goes right through me. 

I thought it was because of a possible cause of ulcers in the pouch. I don't drink it, but that is what I think I was told. It is the acids or something.
