Warning: Your food label could be lying to you!

The GMO is really scary things.  I did some research on that in my local health goroup and did a presenation on that. It is really realy bad stuff. And the GMO based product - like corn and soy - is used to make cereals for children. That is one of the reasons I am glad I am odl enough that I do not have to worry too much about that things and that I don't have childern and have to worry how that stuff is affecting them.

Wow that is frustrating and maddening, both from a general consumer standpoint and from the standpoints of a post surgery RNY consumer and a person with food allergies. I know that the FDA doesn't have a uniform standard for the amount of gluten that is allowed to be in foods to enforce the gluten free promise on some food labels so that is bad enough, but knowing they could even be allowed to be wrong by as much as 20% on the label is even worse. That 20% probably applies to not only calories and fat content but other ingredients. This is why I'm leaning more toward making and eating things homemade (such as Greek yogurt and air popped popcorn instead of microwave, which is full of additives and presevatives) and avoiding anything processed including ice cream.

I think all of the additives and flavorings in foods may be legal but haven't been shown to be healthy long term. I don't think its a coincidence that so many people who are otherwise healthy are getting cancer and skin problems like eczema etc. I've recently switched a tons of things out for the healthy version and am already seeing an improvement in my itching and eczema. I know that our bodies don't know how to digest many of the additives and fillers that are put in food to enhance its flavor or color or texture and our bodies rebel with digestive and skin problems.

I wonder how long food companies will be allowed to be inaccurate and whether consumers will get smarter and stop buying prepackaged food or whether it will continue and people will get sicker and fatter? Time will tell.
You know it's funny but until recently I've never drank Crystal Light but I've been drinking it for the last 5-6 months because I don't like the taste of plain water( I'm really trying to up my water consumption) and I've given up all soda  to prepare for surgery. I've noticed patches on my skin that have gotten very dry and itchy and no amount of lotion seems to help it. I'm wondering now if there's something in the Crystal Light that could be causing that? I think I'm going to stop drinking it for a while and see if that helps at all. This mislabeling on labels is really a scary thing--if you can't trust the FDA who are you suppose to trust ?? Thank God most of our fruits and vegetables are home grown and canned--maybe I should start raising chickens and turkeys as well-LOL.

I get reaction from artificial sweeteners and flavors.  But it took me 2 full weeks of not using them for my skin to really get clear.

also - as i mentioned that to Laura: check your vitamins and minerals - some of them- specially the chewable - have artificial colors, flavors and sweeteners.

I used to drink a lot of the low calorie flavored drinks too, until I realized how many chemicals are in them. Even if I am not allergic to the chemicals or sweeteners in them, I decided it's better to drink plain water to avoid overloading my body with artificial ingredients. I have a flavored drink like Crystal light once in a while but have to be careful or I get the skin reactions that Hala describes too. Its' funny you mention that abut raising chickens and turkeys - but there are many animals injected with hormones that wind up in our stomachs because we eat them. I love meat but have considered becoming vegetarian more than once because of that. It's too drastic of  a step for me but I do try to find hormone free meat whenever possible.

I love Seinfeld and I remember that episode! It was funny how Kramer told Elaine she looked heavy and had gained five or 10 lbs. I would freak out if I gained 10 lb now but in my preop days that was nothing.

yea...

I stopped eating that long time ago. I had reaction to that.  And if you add all the numebers they said that thing had - you would come up with more than 150 cal per pint.

I did not wanted to say anything since last time i complained about a product that made me sick - I was chewed up by same people, and was told that it must be me, since nobody else has issue with it.

I am finding out the hard way that even if they companies to not mean to lie - they not always check the raw material they get so the numbers can be all over the place.

It sucks that you felt you were chewed out by others who said they didn't have an issue with the food that you had. Just because they didn't have an issue with the food doesn't render your bad experience with it invalid or a product of your imagination. I don't like it when people assume that their experiences are universal. Not true.

I agree that many companies may not be intentionally lying, they may be just not being as careful as they should be. I suppose they think it's OK too as long as people are buying the product and the shareholders are getting their profits. They probably think the consumer market will take care of any problems that arise so why change anything but that is a foolish and  unfortunate decision to make since it doesn't put their consumer customers first. Most companies are reactionary instead of proactive and only make changes when they are defendants in a class action lawsuit. It's sad.

Yea things got hot there for a while.  I learn to be more selective what I post or who I replay to. I also start using the block button more.
I still believe that as long as I help or warn just one person - it is worth all the other issues.
And I do try to take things less personally.
I know my body is supper sensitive to so many things, chemicals and food-like product.  And just because the label say one thing - any new food that I introduce into my diet I do test on myself. (measuring sugar response, and skin response - allergy).

Most of the people on  here are supportive and tactful even if they don't agree with the views of others. It's a shame that a few people caused  you to be more selective in who you post or reply to. Using block is smart. It is worth it for you to post your experiences! It is very helpful to people like me. It is very challenging to live with food intolerances and allergies. I've gone about 4 days without itching and hives so this is a victory for me! Thanks for your posts and please keep them up!
