As if I needed any additional stress...

Thanks.  I needed to hear that.

I'm guessing the lady will feel a lot better after she takes her dog to her vet, too.  And just after she has a day to calm down and see that her dog is going to be fine.

I hope so.  I felt horrible knowing that my dog was the reason that this (somewhat frail looking) elderly woman was in such distress.  Maybe I watch too much Judge Judy, but there is a part of me that is worried about what kind of other things might arise out of this...

I've watched my share of Judge Judy.  I doubt she would order you to do more than pay for the other dog's vet bills.  She doesn't typically award people tons of money for "emotional distress," especially when she believes whatever happened was an accident.

I also think your attitude will make a big difference in how the dog owner will feel and how she'll want to proceed.  If you were arguing with her, trying to tell her it was her dog's fault she got bitten or refusing to pay for the vet bills or something, she'd be much more likely to sue.  But you're taking responsibility, you're paying the vet bills, you're telling her how sorry you are this happened.  I bet she'll be feeling better today.

Yes, I think you're right.  I have to go out in a bit (to go to a pool party for work that I really am not in the mood to go to, but RSVD'd for, so will go anyway for a couple of hours (before I have to come home and work for 4 hours... ugh)), so I am going to stop and check on Bella and see if she was able to get into her vet this morning.

I read in a vet's blog somewhere they hate locking leashes. Don't always work. Poor Max has also been stressed from the heat like the rest of us. Probably not himself. Whatever he was smelling he didn't like. Maybe she picked an unfriendly scent up somewhere.

Max has also changed some of his habits since I had Khan put down... sleeping in places Khan slept instead of where he usually sleeps, barking more at people who come to the door or utility people who need to come into the yard, etc... so he has not quite been himself since then.

Bella's owner took her to her own vet this morning, and the bill included $37.50 for IV fluids. Bella has a number of health problems and takes some medications, and if she was dehydrated at 9am this morning, I cannot see how that would be a result of the bite at about 8pm last night... but I wasn't going to say anything to the owner. I will just pay the bill (another $90 on top of the emergency vet bill).

p.s. I will either use the larger retractible leash that I bought for Khan or will just go back to the old fashioned one for Max

Got the same thing here. Hunter lost his brother and started marking territory (me) whenever one of the females was around. Maybe he smelled the medication aroma and thought "vet". Sleeps and wrestles rough with another of the cats now he never used to before. All sorts of behavior changes. Finally started to calm down after a few months then got mom out of the nursing home after rehab. Happened before when the mom cat died. He's grieving for Khan too in his own way. Maybe he thought he was protecting his territory in Khan's absence. Has to be some association in his mind between that dog and something he doesn't like. I sometimes wonder if Hunter thinks his brother went to live in an oxygen case in Akron with that vet.

It would be fascinating to be able to know what is really going through a dog's brain.
