Do weighted hula hoops provide a good workout, or are they just a gimmick?

Answer

from Edward R. Laskowski, M.D.

Weighted hula hoops can be a good addition to your exercise program, especially if you're able to hula hoop for at least 10 minutes at a time. In fact, any type of hula hooping, with a weighted hula hoop or a regular hula hoop, can help you meet your exercise goals.

Weighted hula hoops are bigger and heavier than traditional hula hoops. You can use a weighted hula hoop as part of an overall fitness program, to add variety to your workouts, or simply as a fun way to get more active. Keep in mind that for most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends getting at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity..... read more here.... http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/weighted-hula-hoops/AN01638

Yesterday morning we did not do our regular run ... so instead I had an awesome workout on my hula hoops I MADE MYSELF! .... 60 minutes on my water weighted hoop and 30 minutes on my homemade unweighted hoop.... and I have fun....

Thank you much for the prayers for my sister ((((hugs)))))).. she is hanging in there and responding well to treatment so far ... the side effects are less harsh now than they were in the beginning...

I made my hoops following this guy's instructions ... .they are really simple and I got all the parts that I needed at Lowe's .... I spent less than $30 and made soooooooooooo many hoops out of that one big coil that we had hoops galore for the teens/women in our church group ...

Instead of steelies only I used water to weight my hoops .... I held up one end under the faucet and the other end higher up and when done I did not use the stove nor torch for the end pieces ... I put the connectors in and taped it down tightly .... I tried using a lighter but when the tubing melted and I had to squeeze the parts together I had a problem so I had to do my artsy fartsy way...

Here are the instructions... he is clear as a bell and it is EASY...the cutting tool only cost $5.99  http://www.jasonunbound.com/hoops.html

Ok The title to this post made it where I had to reply to this thread.

YOU CAN NOT TARGET FAT BURN!

Your body will lose weight from where it wants.  Since Healthy people typically have more fat in the abdominal area means you will typically will see more change in that area, but if you have excessive body fat in other regions of your body you could possibly lose from there.

What this does is target your core muscle groups and tone them which when you do lose belly fat will in a normal person result in more definition, but again it does not mean you will burn belly fat.

By you stating this you are reinforcing a myth that many people find frustrating in exercise because they do not see the results they are led to believe they will see.

I guess it is all in the interpretation or missing the message or comprehending what I wrote or reading something else into my message because as a nurse I would NEVER promote or reinforce a myth of any sort....

The tile of my thread is the verbatim title of the first article  that I shared and stated that I JUST WONDERED HOW TRUE IT WAS ...

This is  exactly what I wrote my standing points in bold... read again please.....

"Ah hah! hmmmmmmm when I read my TITLE in this article I just wondered how true it was ... it certainly sounded like FUN ... but not willing to go out there and spend money on something I was not sure I could or would want to continue to do I decide to make my own .... BUT ... it was not until the other day that I read an article from the Mayo Clinic site regarding these here hoops ..."

I guess it is a matter of perception and/or challenging statements/ideas and drawing conclusions...

I posted the title of an article that I WONDERED HOW TRUE IT WAS that I read and THEN the ACCURATE ARTICLE BENEATH IT as posted by a medical doctor who made NO CLAIMS as to fat burn.... but A GOOD EXERCISE ROUTINE...that BURNS CALORIES...

Thank you very much for your input and further clarification though ... it is greatly appreciated as I would hate others to interpret this as me reinforcing a myth ... I REINFORCE NOTHING..... other than a great cardio workout.... I further stated that there is no fat at all in my abdomen but in my rear .... and I concluded stating that I speak about me and in first person because I share my personal experiences only.....

I tried to hula hoop last year and couldn't.  I use to have fun with it when younger.  I'll have to try again now that I've lost some wt.  I imagine it would work the muscles in that area.

I am half the person I was in 2008.

I loved it when I was younger and then I kept trying and trying and trying and wondering why even after I lost all my weight I could no longer do it .... that is when I read about the weighted hula hoops and the hula routine ... then I looked up the prices by googling and I saw this guy's make your own hula site and I was on it ..... no idea if I could do it ... this was last year ... and I have been hula-ing since and I love it...

I used to be able to do it with my hand and around my neck and around my ankle ... and still am working on TRYING to do those ... LOL ...

I believe we can all hula again (those of us who used to do it and couldn't any more like myself) WITH THE WEIGHTED HOOPS .. I STILL have a hard time doing it with the unweighted ones.... note that the doctor states that we have to work HARDER with the unweighted ones so I guess those are better ID****ep trying but they fall after every10-15 minutes ... the weighted ones I can keep going and going .... there are different routines with them ...

Keep trying ... that is what I did ...

Hoola hooping is WAY harder than it looks. I have only successfully done it once! I cannot imagine with weighted hoops.

The weighted hoops stay up better than the unweighted ones.... it is definitely not easy but for those of us who enjoyed hula hooping in the past and could no longer do it because of our obesity ... and would like to get back to it ... and even those who do not mind trying something new ... it IS an awesome and fun workout...

I hula'ed for years .. and then I no longer could .. not even when I was weighing 111 pounds at my lowest weight during my first year and a half post RNY .... it was with the weighted ones that I finally could ... we have awesome fun and we incorporated it to the wellness program at outreach at our house of praise and it is the rave with the women and teens especially ... we have a couple of obese moms that are better than any one of the teens put together ... I definitely can't keep up with them both boys and girls LOL...

BTW I just did not put that hula around my waist and started hula-ing ... it was over the course of trying again and again until I got it ... because I wanted to do it and refused to give up ...

I did that with Bikram ... the first time I went I swore I would never go back .... the second time I just laid on the mat and thought I was going to die .... the fourth time I tried ... the fifth time I did ALL the poses .... and now no one can stop me from hot yoga twice weekly ... I love it and so does my body ... it really unkinks and relaxes ... and the dry heat is a bonus ....

I vote you try it again ... I bet you'll like it LOL ... but then again ... if you don't that is okay too ... the awesomeness of it all is the variety of modalities out there for each to pick one or several things that he/she likes or want to try ... I think it is awesome...
