What do you expect that having RNY gastric bypass surgery will do for you?
So far, it gave me two blissful months of peace. I expect it will keep me from eating the quantities I used to eat and will relieve my hunger enough so I can make good choices.

What do you expect that your life will be like when you get to your goal?
I will be much freer without the prison of this heavy, immobile body.

What do you expect that you'll feel like when you get to that goal?
   Hungry!
   Seriously, though: Proud and disbelieving.

What do you expect that you'll have to do, in addition to eating right and moving, to get to your goal and maintain your success?
I'll have to win more head hunger battles. New habits will have to wear some deep ruts in my road, deep enough that it's harder to wander from the path than stay on it.
I might have to learn to take care of myself. Maybe I'll have to grow self-esteem, or even love myself. I hope not, because I never have before and Medicare won't pay for a brain transplant or a life do-over.

Make it easier for me to lose weight and keep it off.

My day to day life will be the same as it now.  Crazy, hectic, busy.

What do you expect that you'll feel like when you get to that goal?

I'll have much more energy and stamina, less joint pain.  I won't "feel" this but my blood pressure will finally be under control.

What do you expect that you'll have to do, in addition to eating right and moving, to get to your goal and maintain your success?

Remember where I came from.

What do you expect that having RNY gastric bypass surgery will do for you?
I'm expecting it to relieve my GERD to some degree, hopefully eliminate the symptoms. I'm keeping my fingers crossed but even if it just reduces it I'd be really happy. I'm expecting it to provide me with a tool that will enable me to get off the yo-yo dieting train which has just gotten more difficult, self-destructive, and led to more weight gain. And I expect that if I follow the recommendations I'm given I will end up at a healthy weight and feel a lot better, physically as well as mentally. I expect to have more room in my closet after I'm at a stable weight because I won't have clothes in several different sizes anymore.

What do you expect that your life will be like when you get to your goal?
I expect that things will be stable, steady, and healthy. Calm. It'll require work to lose and maintain and I'll need to be mindful. I don't want to be overly paranoid or frantic about it though... that kind of attitude led to yo-yoing in the past. I want to find that balance. I don't want to have sore knees after exercising or feel fat in the way while working out and will no longer have to deal with that at goal. I won't have to see people for the first time in awhile and know that they're thinking to themselves that I've gained weight since the last time they saw me (I think every yo-yo/chronic dieter has dealt with this unfortunate psychic ability).

What do you expect that you'll feel like when you get to that goal?
Pretty good!

What do you expect that you'll have to do, in addition to eating right and moving, to get to your goal and maintain your success?
I need to make sure that my head is on straight. If my head is okay, I'll be okay.

My expectations from having the WLS is that I will get a new lease on life. A chance to lose enough weight to give me freedom to move and to make the changes that I need to keep off the weight and make healthier decisions for my body. To be able to be there for others that are starting this journey. To get rid of my comorbid-medications. Hmmmm, what do I expect that my life will be like when I get to my goal? I am assuming that you mean "goal weight"...Well, I don't really have a goal weight & my doc hasn't given me one either. I am hoping once I get rid of this weight that stops me from being active, that I will be more mobile once I have lost some weight and gotten off my meds. I hope to have a healthier outlook on life in general and learn to love me, for me....not have "food" be my lover!I believe that I will need to continue to be taking my vitamins, drink my fluids, add activity to my day once I get where I want to be. I expect to have to have plastic surgery down the road (since I am a big ole gal at this moment)..I will look back on my journey; since I am writing in a journal each day about my feelings and my personal goals (things I want to be able to do) and I praise God for the opportunity to have this "tool" available too me. I purposely didn't read any other responses here before posting, cause I wanted this to be just Brenda's thoughts on this and not anyone else's thoughts. I think that I will always need to stay focused on ME...what works for me, what doesn't; how to never let myself/my mind allow me to fall backwards and into old habits. I want a full life, I don't want it cut short. I want to LIVE LIFE, everyday!

What do you expect that having RNY gastric bypass surgery will do for you?
Make activities of daily living doable. I actually have a housekeeper right now for a 1300sq ft apt because I don't have the energy to clean house.

What do you expect that your life will be like when you get to your goal?
I actually have a very fulfilled like at HW:350lbs. But much of what those see of me is a front. Deep down I am incredibley unhappy. So I think my life will be an honest one when I hit my goal.

What do you expect that you'll feel like when you get to that goal?
Light as a feather. Successful. I have a Bachelors, two Masters degrees, and certification in case management, and a license in clinical social work so I have been committed all my life, yet my weight was something I could never conquor. It will feel so accomplished.

What do you expect that you'll have to do, in addition to eating right and moving, to get to your goal and maintain your success?
I will have to stay honest with myself. I plan to keep "fat" clothes as a reminder, and pictures of my old self. I think it is important to not forget where you came from.

Thanks for doing this poll Niki- I would like to add something however for the newbies and those thinking about surgery. I am one determined woman and am very strong willed and felt very prepared for this process, especially given this surgery was a revision for me. However, I had NO IDEA how hard this would be from the pre-op diet through surgery. Today15 days post op is the first day I have felt human. I have cried, been grouchy, unable to eat or drink anything including the protein, etc. It IS HARD and people need to be prepared for this and be kind to themselves as you will get through it.

What do you expect that having RNY gastric bypass surgery will do for you?

Lose close to or all of extra 200 pounds I have been carrying around. Get off my diabetes and cholesterol medicine.

What do you expect that your life will be like when you get to your goal?

Live a lifestyle that most 24  years old can live. Go out with friends, dance, being able to look up when Im walking down the halls at school istead of looking down at my feet. All around more active.

What do you expect that you'll feel like when you get to that goal?

I know this sounds crazy but I feel like when I reach my goal I will be the real me for the first time in my life. My sisters and mom are also overweight and have always joked around and said I had a "skinny" person trapped inside of me. I have had the same 7 best friends (guys and girls) since I was 9 years old. They are all super active and healthy. They have always done active things (sometimes I tagged along but with the more weight I gained I stopped) I have always wanted to run marathons with them, hike with them, play softball with them and go to clubs, amusments parks, shopping. Dont get me wrong I have always been welcome but never really felt comfortable. Im excited to be the person that I am on the inside on the outside.

What do you expect that you'll have to do, in addition to eating right and moving, to get to your goal and maintain your success?

Other than eating healthy and working out I would say keeping with all my vitamins, and maybe also for me seeing a therapist for a while.
