Admitting that I haven't quit smoking yet.

I quit 5 years ago this coming Sunday using Chantix, that and the Chantix Users Club on Quitnet which was already mentioned.  I urge you to make a quitnet account (it's free, like here), look up that club and join it.

Make yourself accountable, go there each day and pledge that you won't smoke.  It makes such a difference if you promise others that you won't do it.

Good luck.

My husband is trying to quit smoking and he is using the e-cigarette and LOVES it.  He so far has gone from a pack a day to only one or two a day using the e-cigarette.  They have lots of different flavors you can chose and you can use it inside because it smells nice and is smokeless.  Look it up maybe it will help...I have only heard bad things about Chantix.  Good luck not an easy thing to do

For me not wanting to get an ulcer would not have been a strong enough motivator. That seems so distant and unpredictable.
I quit 97/99. I quit many times before that. I've tried everything.
I think you should throw everything at your addiction to nicotine that you can. They have free phone therapy (from the money the tobacco companies had to pay out. Hypnosis is good because smoking is deep breathing. Part of why it's so relaxing is you are taking deep breaths. Hypnosis can teach you to deep breath. Patch or pill up. Keep trying.

I had to quit for 6 months prior to my surgery,  I was smoke free for about 8 months then about 2 months after my surgery I just picked up a cigarette and have been smoking since.  In my mind I am losing to many of my friends, (food, cigarettes and pop) so I turned to my cigarettes.  I can't say smoking isn't hurting me but I am using it as a crutch, a very very very bad crutch but I am still using it.  At this stage I would rather risk smoking then starting to cheat with food, if I want something that I know I can't eat I go outside and have a cigarette and the feeling passes.  I used Chantix to help me quit before but no matter if I took it with food or not I was in pain for about 2 hours afterwords but I stuck it out.  I guess I will have to try it again. Don't be hard on yourself, remember you lost the weight now try and lose the habit.  I guess I should practise what I preach.  Good luck!!!

Hypnosis did it for me.  I smoked for 22 years pack a day and I was drug by a friend to one of those stop smoking seminars at a local hotel on January 9, 1992.  Walked out a non-smoker and never looked back.

It was $40 well spent.

I totally get it... I was shown a picture by my RNY Doctor who performed my surgery the day before I had my surgery... He showed me what smoking would do to my pouch.  After I left his office, I took the pack and threw them away....  I have not had a cigarette since...  Has it been hard...  Yes it has!  But I have not stopped to buy any and I walk when I need a cigarette and I keep a copy of that picture with me every where I go...  It was and is an awful picture and horrible things those ulcers are and it will tear your pouch up.

If I can do it, I anyone can do it.. I smoked up to 2 packs a day depending on how many people at work ticked me off that day.. (I'm in a high stress job)...  Ask your doctor to show you real pictures he/she has taken of someone who smoked and if you could have a picture...  For me it worked...  Good luck in your journey..  I know that Chantix can be hard to take and give you bad feelings and sometimes nightmares...  So do whatever you can to stop...  My thoughts are with you.

I took welbutrin for a few years for depression and it never made me not want to smoke. Now, I have quit as of 5/14/12 and I used the patch. Having that nicotine in my body helped me a lot. I took 6 weeks total and have been off of them about 3 weeks now. I do still want to smoke when I get really stressed, but I remind myself that if I'm hoping to get my insides rerouted and go through all of the pain with it, then doing this is the way to go so that I don't have to have future stomach surgeries for ulcers.

Good luck to you, you really CAN do this!

My heart is with you on this one.

My mom started smoking when she was 15. She continued to smoke up until the day she was last admitted to the hospital. Earlier that day she was smoking her last cigarette. (not that she knew it was her last). The cancer meds and pain meds had her so drugged out that when she put her cigarette out in the ashtray, she missed and put it out on her abdomen. Shortly after her vitals started to drop and my dad called for an ambulancce. This was shortly after Thanksgiving in 2007. She was hospitalized and while my dad continued to have hopes of her returning home, she never did. She made it until the 4th of January before the cancer took her life. Some of her last lucid moments included her irritated demands for her cigarettes, and her cursing us out for not getting them for her (she didn't quite realize she wasn't in her bedroom at home).

I had nothing but sadness for her, and anger towards the habit-forming drugs like nicotine that have the power to control a person's life. Seeing my mother's addiction to cigarettes made me virulently anti-addiction in all things. I've seen in my life how evil addiction is, how hopeless some of the addicted have been when they know how in thrall they are to the substance that has become their master.

May you have the strength to take the control of your life that is possible and hold on tight!!!

February 1st 2003 I had spent the night with my 3yr old grand baby in the hospital. She lived in the hospital off & on for 2 years with asthma. I walked out of that room the next morning & threw my cigarettes in the trash. I never touched another one. I tried the patches but they itched like crazy so I did it cold turkey. It's a process & I kept telling myself that I am stronger than that cancer stick.  I was not going to let it win. I've been tobacco free for almost 10 years. Wow. Keep trying until you've  quit.
