Admitting that I haven't quit smoking yet.
I don't' experience many side effects either besides vivid dreams and the tummy pain when I take it. I just need to take it and plan a FOR SURE quit date and commit to it. I have only been taking the Chantix once a day evade cause it costs me 180 a month but I think I need to start taking it twice a day again like I did before surgery when I last quit. Good luck to you as well!!
It's harder than hell, no question. Keep plugging away. I smoked for about 10 years and tried to quit a least once a year. I was finally able to quit for good 81/2 years ago.
One thing that was essential for me: avoiding smokers, smoke, and even seeing people smoking on tv or in movies.
good luck. we're pulling for you

I read an article recently that said something like 57% of RNY patients that develop ulcers are smokers. I may have that number wrong but it was up there. Smoking was more likely to cause an ulcer than taking NSAIDS.
I've never smoked, and I'm really glad, but I do get that it's hard. My sister tried multiple times to quit before she finally did. She said what did it for her was that she finally decided she wanted to be a non-smoker more than she wanted to smoke.
If the Chantix causes you problems, what about the nicotine patch or something else?
Oh, and there's this. Saying today is the last day is like saying we'll go on a diet tomorrow. We know how well that worked, right? So how about stopping NOW? Not tomorrow, not later, right now?

There is a HIGH probability you'll get ulcers from smoking. One poor 21 year old have 6 surgeries from bleeding ulcers UNTIL SHE LEARNED TO STOP SMOKING. I've spoke to her dad numberous times, and he witnessed her spitting up blood from these ulcers--one surgery required 6 cauterizations to repair the the ulcer. If you have to you might try a hypnotist. I resorted to a hypnotist to stop smoking in 1991, and it worked immediately and I've not had done any smoking since that date. DAVE

I quit a couple of months ago using Chantix. I won't say it's been fun, but it has been much easier than other times I tried to quit.
One thing that has helped me tremendously is a great website for smoking cessation: Quitnet.com
It's similar to OH, with many people to help support and encourage you. There is a section for
Chantix users -- click on "Clubs" and join the Chantix users club. The main forum is also great.
Good luck -- I know how hard it is, I smoked for 40 years. I'm still working on this quit - haven't smoked at all, but the mental part is the most difficult for me. I make sure to go the the Quitnet.com site every day or two, more if I'm having a particularly bad day.
You said it hurt you when you take it....did you mean stomach pain? If so, try taking it with meals.

I have firsthand experience with how hard it is to quit smoking. I have smoked for over 20 years and about 5 weeks ago, I was told I would need to quit for surgery. I decided to use the patch, it didn't work. Then I heard about the electronic ciggies. Let me tell you, I bought a total of 3 disposable ones in a matter of 2 weeks and have not smoked a real cig nor an electronic one in over 3 weeks, I feel great and don't really miss it at all. Everyone is different, but I hope that you can find something that will work for you. Your life is so very important! Good luck!
I used Chantix to quit 8 weeks prior to my surgery. It worked well, I had no side effects and I did take it with food. It does make cigarettes taste like crap! Like an earlier poster, I to resumed smoking after my surgery. Now, if I get plastic surgery done, eventually, I will have to quit again. From some research I have done and what my PCP says it takes most people several attempts to quit before they succeed and stay quit. Good luck to you on quitting!
You might try using e-cigs. I used V2 ordered online and it did help a lot. I had purchased the disposable ones though. They are a little different than "regular" smoking. I still use one at times. I can go longer without smoking than I used to. I don't cough and my lungs are clear. With me it's more they act of holding the cigarette. Also, my first step in quitting has always been to start eliminating places and times that I smoked. That helps me a lot.
