OT - Buster

Yesterday, my 12.5 year old, one-eyed Shih Tzu had a hard time getting up and laying down.
He's old and has arthritis (you can literally hear his joints cracking when he walks) and I
thought he was just having a rough day.
This morning we get up and I noticed something on the inside of Buster's leg.  It looked
bloody.  My husband picked him up and said "Oh my God....his leg's swollen and bloody."
Now, I don't have kids thanks to PCOS and such.  So, this dog is literally my child.  When I
come home from work, he jumps on the couch and nuzzles his head into my neck and
cries.  He follows me everywhere.
So, I ran him to the vet immediately.  I ddn't take the time
to brush my hair, teeth or anything.
I get to the vet only to find out it's an abscess.  Because he has CHF, a significant heart
murmur and he's old, they didn't really want to put him under anesthesia to remove the
abscess.  However, it was so big that a local anesthesia wouldn't make him comfortable
enough.  I was ok and understood this.....until the tech came back in with the estimate.  Over
$1000.  I started crying immediately.  I knew DH was not going to be ok with that kind of
money.  We've already spent $900 on bladder stone surgery for him and $2600 to get his
eye removed (injury caused severe glaucoma which caused migraines/blindness).  Not only
that, but Buster is old.
The tech went and got the vet.  He felt so bad.  I told him that DH said no..which he did...and
that I couldn't bear to put him down.  Thankfully the vet replied "No, No!  I would not let you
do that.  We would try heavy doses of antibiotics before doing that."  I felt relief.  So, we talked
and he agreed to lance it (not remove it) and put him on a heavy course of antibiotics for
$360.  I could do that!  So, my baby Buster is at the vet hospital now.  They are going to lance
it and pray that the antibiotics and lancing will clear it up.  I have to bring him back next week.
If it's not cleared up, then the surgery is a must.  Please pray to God that this works.  I can't
bear to put him down yet.  We just put our other one down last year due to prostate cancer.

Thanks for listening.  Sorry it's so long.

Oh, he is so cute!  I hope the antibiotics work.  It's so hard when our furbabies are sick.

Thank you, Kelly.  I hope they do, too.  AND...I hope Cayenne is doing better!  Is she home?

I'm really attached to my 11.5 year old ****er spaniel, so I empathize a lot with your story!  (He's the dog in my avatar.)  I hope Buster gets better on the antibiotics, and I'll be thinking about you both.
