I am officially COMPLETELY fed up with this insomnia!

I agree to an extent. Getting knocked out with Versed and Fentanyl there's no lying in bed, wondering if sleep would claim you. You just are awake one minute, and awake the next minute, but in between minutes, or hours have passed.

I think insomnia is probably one of the most insidious issues in our country. When you don't sleep enough, your body doesn't function correctly.

Sorry, Lora : ( My hubby struggles with sleep issues a lot so I understand what it can do to a person...

I know this is not the smartest thing but I have been known to eat something super high carby that will make me sleepy but not sick kinda like carb coma??

Be happy.

Laura, since I'm in the last throes of perimenopause, my quality of sleep has suffered tremendously. I don't have insomnia, per se, but I do sleep restlessly and wake often (10+ times in the night)...sometimes to go to the bathroom, sometimes just because, sometimes night sweats. My lack of sleep had become a quality of life factor, so when I last saw my PCP I asked the Dr. for help.

I haven't taken Ambien or any other on-label sleep rx, but I did relate to the doctor that I had taken Trazadone in the past. He said fine, let's try that. So armed with a new prescription, I've had much better sleep results in the past couple of weeks. I go to sleep easier, stay asleep longer, and wake less during the night. I still wake, but my sleep efficiency has catapulted from 60% to about 90% (and that 30% seems to be the critical mass I was lacking).

Don't know if you've thought about trying this particular rx or if you have a similar sleep pattern, but just thought I'd provide some anecdotal thoughts/solutions...

I do so hope you get some quality sleep soon! This whole perimenopause/menopausal journey has been eye-awakeing (and sometimes not in a good way).

I don't have a meter, but I feel ok...  I even start to doze off but then cannot actually get to sleep.  I suppose with the hypoglycemia, I should have one, but everything seems very controllable if I eat on schedule so I never bothered to ask the doctor for one.

I know sleeping medications are an individual choice, but I was having so much trouble with insomnia that I finally filled a prescription my doc had given me for Restoril.

Works like a charm. But now I worry about getting too dependent on it since it's a benzodiazapene. The docs don't worry, but I do.

Six of one, 1/2 a dozen of the other I suppose. I sure like sleeping more than I like insomnia though. Mine had gotten really bad post-op as well. Pre-op I think all I did most of the time was sleep.

Anywho, best of luck to you Lora. Hope you find what works for you. Pretty sure many of us can certainly relate.

I know that I am not a particularly patient person, but I think that I have been MORE than patient with the various attempts to find something to help with this ridiculously persistent insomnia!  When I have taken Sonata in the past, the 2mg was plenty to guarantee quickly falling asleep and a full night of uninterrupted sleep.   Now, however, even 3mg of Sonata just makes me zombie-like but not sleepy.  I cannot take Ambien (it gives me auditory hallucinations... a really bad thing for someone with PTSD!), I tried some melatonin (no help), and the samples my PCP had of Sonata did not help either. I may have to try a higher dose of that, though (my PCP suggested trying the Lunesta first).

I have generally had more trouble sleeping ever since my RNY (but I have also needed less sleep), but the really bad insomnia just started a few months ago.  Menopause is just one giant PITA.  It certainly makes me appreciate the 18 years between my hysterectomy and this nonsense of not having to deal with anything  "female".

The worst part of it is that the urge to snack at 3am is pretty hard to resist. Sigh...

I  am right there with you.  I have never, ever, ever had insomnia is my whole life.....I document everything. and my insomnia began April, 2010, and on the same day Acne. A year and a half post-op

Now here we are, July 2012 and I am still suffering.  A couple days ago I was cleaning out my closet and was shocked at how many bottles of Ambien i have taken in the last 2 years.  What the hell am I suppose to doo with the rest of my life.  Is this a side effect of WLS that is unreported, undiscovered, or not known by surgeons.  the acne too.  I have not had acne since I was a teenager and now my skin looks worse than my teenagers and nothing OTC seems to stop the mark leaving "lil boogers".

For insomnia, trazodone make me ill when I take it, hungover the next morning like a I rode a bad carnival ride 7 times in a row.  Lunesta leaves a metallic taste in my mouth and a hungover feeling, I have tried melatonin and same issue, the only thing that works for me is Ambien 10mg, and even if I take it late and only get 5 hours of sleep I wake up refreshed.

However, on the dark side.  It too suffer from PTSD and severe anxiety, and many times I have awaken to candy stuck to my pajamas or ice cream sandwiches melted in bed I did not eat and also many late night snack sessions.  That is the bad part.  My DH even videotaped me and I am sooooo tempted to post it on you tube.  I was shocked at how I sleep walk and sleep talk.....And just to think, I have 15 stairs to walk down from my master bedroom to the kitchen....disaster.

Check your sugar... I notice I wake up after a few hrs of sleep when my sugar gets low.  And the snacking may be your body need some sugar to get pass the low BS...
I never had sleep issue before RNY... Since RNY - 2 years post op - I can't sleep as well... and sleep maybe 6-7 hrs the most. Last few months was the worst - but that also is when my most severe RH episodes started.  I think in my case these 2 are connected.

I noticed that I never had RH until after RNY and I crave carbs like an ant craves picnics.

Yea.. its me... Hala B.  When OH went "public" FB public  - I changed my ID and picture... Not really want people who google me to see my OH profile.

I think the RH may be responsible for a lot of issues for some of us post op RNY.  I never expected to have problem with my sleep...
And for a while the RH was just that - reactive.  But I notice that my sugar may drop now not only when I eat carbs  - but also when I don't eat often enough... Waking up to night low BS - when i know that for the last few days I have been so "good" with my diet  .... really good... and very stable - is a new thing.  If the past - I could blame that on "other factors".... but this time - not so much... It sucks...
