Can you get too much protein?

the answer is yes, but not 88. especially because you are not absorbing most of that now.

Now, i am a proponent of 'too much of a good thing is still too much', and i work to stay very close to my range goal. but 88 doesn't seem unreasonable early out.

I've looked at lots of people's labs after RNY and I have never seen anyone with a protein or albumin level that was too high, or even at the high end of the normal range, on just 88 grams of protein a day.  I've seen some with low protein levels on that amount a day, though.

 i agree with ya.

i'm just not one of those people that says 60 is good so 200 grams must be better.  i think people need to go based on their labs.  i get mine drawn again on tuesday so hopefully i'll have a better idea of where i stand then.

Oh, I agree with you.  More is not necessarily better.  And we should all be going by our labs.  I just wanted to point out that in looking at a lot of labs, I've never seen anyone for whom 88 grams a day was too much protein.  I know many docs and dieticians recommend 60 grams a day but from looking at lots of labs, it seems not many RNY patients can maintain a good protein level on that amount.  Most need at least a little more.

Yes it is possible for people to get too much protein.

But no, you are not getting too much protein.

With protein the main thing to worry about is getting enough water to accompany the protein. Processing it takes a good deal of water especially for your kidneys.

But 88g is not going to kill you. Depending on your weight 188g probably wouldn't hurt you (altho by no means am I suggesting you get that much).

At the height of my food zealot stage, I was getting about 170g a day. No health problems but I did look like that wrestler Chyna Doll and I didn't think that was cute so I started cutting back.
