Calcium quiz - test yourself!

What type of calcium is recommended for RNY folks?

Why can’t we absorb calcium carbonate very well?

How much calcium does the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery say we need?

What vitamin is known for helping us absorb calcium?  Bonus points if you can tell us how high your level of that vitamin should be (as seen when you get your blood work done) in order for you to absorb calcium well.

Calcium blocks the absorption of what vitamin or mineral?

I don't know all of these, but we need calcium citrate, we can't absorb carbonate cause we lack the acid that breaks it down to absorb it (I think) we need 1,500 a day, I don't know which vitamin helps absorb calcium, but I know you can't take iron with it or the iron won't be absorbed.

The vitamin that helps with absorption of calcium is vitamin D.  We don't actually have to take vitamin D at the same time as our calcium, though of course we can, but we need to have a good vitamin D level, at least 80, in order for our bodies to absorb calcium well.  And you got all the others right!

1. Calcium Citrate

2. We need a lot of stomach acid to break down carbonate, and we don't have that anymore.

3. 1500-2000mgs

4. Vit D (level of 80 is great)

5. Iron
