Can't believe I don't know this. Giving blood post-op?
lol Hey Rosy ... No ... I was showered and ready to walk out the door for my appointment when the financial office called & said that the auth code I had still wasn't official. It was a huuuuge run around. But I now have an appt for June 15th.
The really fun part ? The initial referral I received from the PCP expires on June 7th (It was a 90 day referral but thanks to my PCP office I have waited almost 3 mths just for a consult). I've got a call into the surgeon's office to make sure I am still on for the 15th.
Come hell or high water I WILL be having this surgery lol.
Thanks for thinking of me!

My red cross gave me a card with dates and my blood type. I did donate double red cells. http://www.redcrossblood.org/donating-blood/types-donations/ double-red-blood-cells-donation not sure I can still do that.
a lot of people don't know their blood type - they would love to take your blood and test it!
I am pretty sure they run the test anyway as part of their testing, just a double check sort of thing.

Yes they do LOVE. Can I tell you about the time my iron tested low and they found out I was AB neg and tried to insist on taking a drop from each finger until they found a drop of blood with enough iron for me to qualify.
Yeah...I walked away. Very fast! I get that they need blood (although to me if not that many folks have my type it would be more prudent to put me "on call" on an as-needed basis, wouldn't it?) but that was a bit frightening.
Incidentally, none of my fingers came back with enough iron. But that was pre-op. These days my iron labs come back pretty good.

Wow, that's really scary that they would be willing to risk someone's health in order to get a blood donation. I wonder who one would report that to? I feel pretty sure they are not supposed to do that.

Oh at the time (years ago) I was so young and dumb I didn't question it. But now I would have called somebody. And it won't ever happen again!

I think the best donation would be platelets. It's a longer donation but a small amount is taken out. You are hooked up to a phresis machine that pulls out the platelets and puts the red blood cells, plasma, and white cells back. The actual volume taken out is very small and it wouldn't affect your iron or anemia levels. I am NOT anemic for the very first time in my life. Thank you new kidney! It's amazing what having more oxygen carrying red cells can do for you.
I don't think anyone in the first year should donate red blood cells. You also should know your iron, hct and hgb.

I started donating blood over 30 years ago when I was in college but I haven't donated since my surgery. My iron was low even before my surgery and I have had several iron transfusions. My hematologist said if I gave blood I would just be giving away the blood he gave me. He said he didn't think it would be a problem other than that. :)
