Can't believe I don't know this. Giving blood post-op?

Your H&H (they'll check this there)
Your iron levels (true indicator of anemia)
Your fluid status
Remember they are taking roughly 1/8th of your blood, which is significant if you are already dehydrated and/or anemic. If you are borderline anemic then it can make a significant difference.
A better bet would be to donate blood marrow or plasma, which will be less detrimental (if you are at risk) than donating whole blood.
I run a low iron level, but a great H&H, so I cannot donate blood.

I would recommend, if you plan to donate, bringing something you can eat afterward. They steered me to the "recharge" snack table after donating, and it was all cookies and candy and stuff.

I know because I was tested at birth. Long story short, I have Rh negative blood. My mom does too. Rh is a factor in blood and when you don't have it and you get preggers by someone who is Rh positive (my dad was) your body can build up anti-bodies against the Rh. That wouldn't have affected me as a first child, but when you have subsequent pregnancies and the babies are Rh positive your body can attack the fetus as if it is a virus. So you have to take special precautions (a shot mid-way through pregnancy and one afterward if the baby is positive, which I was not).
I had to go through the same thing. I am AB- and the girls dad is B+. Both the girls are B+. So I hadda get four shots in the butt. But until my oldest was born I did not know how rare my blood type is (in fact less than 1% of the total population of the US has the same blood type as me), which is why the Red Cross people love me and don't ever want to have to let me out the door!

I do recall being asked while pregnant if my daughter's father had his RH levels tested & he had. I told them he was RH negative & that was the last I heard. No shots in the butt (that just sounds unpleasant) so I assume the docs know what my type is ... Just never felt the need to share it with me lol. The next time I see the big red bus I will stop by & make a deposit ;)
If you had no shots in the butt, you are Rh positive. :) But yes, they will be able to tell you.
I don't think many folks pay attention to their blood type unless they have good reason to. It used to be (in the dark ages before DNA tests) that people would hurl paternity threats at each other with blood types but nowadays that's not necessary anymore. Everyone goes straight for the DNA (although in my opinion since blood type can still rule someone out as the daddy, it is cheaper to test a blood type than DNY. I'm just sayin.)
