What is normal the first few weeks?

I see posts all the time asking if something is normal, and it's perfectly fine for people to ask that, but I wanted to post about it.  There is a really wide range of what's normal the first few weeks after RNY.  For instance, all of the following can be considered normal:

- it's normal if you have diarrhea
- it's normal if you don't poop for a week
- it's normal if you have no trouble drinking
- it's normal if you find it hard to get all your water in
- it's normal if you don't feel hungry
- it's normal if you do feel hungry
- it's normal if you feel nauseous or throw up sometimes
- it's normal if everything goes down great and you never throw up
- it's normal if your stomach makes weird noises
- it's normal if you have gas
- it's normal if you don't have much pain and don't need pain meds
- it's normal if your belly hurts and you need to take pain meds
- it's normal if you feel anxious, emotional, sad, etc.
- it's normal if protein shakes you liked pre op taste bad now or make you feel icky
- it's normal if you have no trouble at all getting your protein shakes in
- it's normal if you have buyer's remorse
- it's normal if you worry that you're not going to lose any weight
- it's normal if you run a low grade fever (like 100 degrees or less)
- it's normal if you feel exhausted

Kelly,
I am going to print this out and put it all over my house, so that when I experience any of the above I will remember IT IS NORMAL!!!  Thanks!

You crack me up but this is actually a very good post ;).

I'll add that...

-it's normal not to get anywhere near your protein goal for the day for the first few weeks
-it's normal not to feel full from shakes, soups, or anything else that funnels through your pouch fairly quickly (I've seen this mentioned/asked a lot)
-it's normal to be up for an hr & then sleep for an hr & continue that pattern all day & still be able to sleep through the night
-it's normal to also get insomnia
-it's normal for ladies to have weird period cycles, more often or less often
-it's normal in general for your taste buds to change (usu temporary, sometimes permanent)
-it's normal to just downright be pissed & mad at the world ;)
-it's normal for vice versa of everything above ;)

Ooh, ooh! I want to play!

- it's normal if your breath stinks
- it's normal if your sense of smell is heightened
- it's normal if you are tired/weak
- it's normal if you can't sleep lying flat
- it's normal if you can only sleep lying flat
- it's normal if you are repulsed by the food your family is eating
- it's normal if you crave the food your family is eating

Kelly..great list..made me laugh.  I think I may have asked at least 85% of those questions.
But, here is one question I was going to ask..when does your hair start falling out and how long does it last?

Not everyone has hair loss although I think most people have at least a little.  Usually starts around three months out and lasts until six or seven months out.

Thank you Kelly for starting this thread. It has saved me a lot of typing and a lot of questions. I am going to cut and paste and post this in my house too!
