the feeding tube diet

You all have heard about that, right?

Well, it just confuses me.  Why not just drink protein shakes for 800 calories a day?  Why would pouring what is essentially a protein shake down a tube in your nose be any more effective than drinking the protein shakes?  Wouldn't drinking the protein shakes actually be more satisfying, because you'd get to taste stuff?

Also, I'm wondering how many people cheat on that diet?  They are only supposed to drink water, coffee or tea, but there is nothing to prevent them from drinking milkshakes or eating anything they want while on the diet.

I just think it's bizarre.

I'm not sure how good food goes down while you have an NG tube. I would imagine that it would feel like you have something stuck in your throat when the food sticks to the tube.  Also, the formula is reportedly "patented"  and may not be palateable, and it's kinda like a "drip" action that keeps the body constantly being fed and the metabolism up. That's what I gather.

I don't think the tube makes it difficult to eat.  I've never tried eating with one in, but I used to work in a nursing home and we had patients with NG tubes that ate.  They didn't complain about the tube making it hard to eat.

You can google it.  It was featured on 20/20 recently and you can see the episode on hulu.com.

Basically they have an NG tube inserted, a tube that goes in the nose and down the back of the throat into the stomach, and get fed through the tube for ten days.  They get 800 calories a day.  Naturally, you lose 15 or 20 pounds.  I assume they are likely to regain it, though, as soon as the ten days is over.  and I don't get the point of doing 800 calories through a feeding tube instead of just doing an 800 calorie diet where you eat the 800 calories.
