RNY/Diabetes

I had my RNY surgery on March 21, 2012.  At the time of surgery, I was taking two kinds of insulin, 5 shots per day, 128 total units of insulin per day, plus taking Januvia.  While in the hospital, I was given two doses of fast acting insulin (both times, 2 units). I left the hospital 2 nights after surgery, insulin free and my blood sugars continue to be very well controlled.

I feel so incredibly blessed and grateful, as the RNY's potential effect on my diabetes was the reason I decided on this surgery as opposed to the VSG, which I felt was slightly less invasive (as they don't reroute your plumbing!).

I'm curious to know the affects of the RNY on diabetes for other patients.  Anyone care to weigh in (no pun intended!)?

Not diabetic preop but well on my way. I have PCOS, which required me to take metformin for the past 10 years for my insulin resistance. took my last pill the day before surgery and, after checking my blood about a thousand times in the hospital, i was cleared to stop it. doing fine!

I had my surgery March20, 2012.  At that time I was 309 lbs and taking 2 types of insulin and 2 pills a day.  Sugar would not go down at all.  Weightloss was my only option to get my diabetes under control and I could not do it on my own.  After I had surgery I got 1 unit os regular insulin.  Afew days after that my sugar jumped up to 292 and I had to take 5 units of insulin.  Since that day I aproud to say I have not taken any at all.  My sugars today are around 130-150.  Doctor says they are still a little high but it will take baout 3-6 months for my body to recycle itselfs and then they will go lower.  But I am doing really well.  Today I am 8 weeks and thinking that is the best thing that I have ever done.

So happy to hear this story. Mine is similar.  I was 255 the day of surgery.  My sugars (without medicine) are currently between 100 and 125 and the endocrinologist thinks they will just continue to go down as I lose more weight and continue exercising.  I've been really watching as I add in foods to see if they would jump but they are holding steady.  FEELS GREAT, doesn't it!?

I have been type 2 diabetic for 15 years now and the RNY was the best thing I could ever do to help with this.  Looking for a future of an insulin pump as my number were out of control.  This is not totally a cure for being diabetic, once a diabetic always a diabetic.  This will help your numbers go down and have you feeling much better.

My diabetic doctor is pleased with my progress.  Even though I never reached my final goal weight, but with a total of 76 pounds gone forever, my last HBA1C is 6 which was is down from 8.4 prior to surgery.

Hope to get back on the weight loss band wagon, as I just had a total hip replaced 6.5 weeks ago.  Still did the exercise thing at the gym but was mostly to prepare for the surgery.  Looking forward to getting back to the gym to start the energy burn to loose more weight.

Good luck with your journey.

In October 2011, my A1C was 13 (this is like having maple syrup running through your veins!).  My last test (pre-surgery) was 6.4.  Congrats to you!!  I can't wait to see my 3 month blood test results!

I was using U500 insulin at 35 units 3x a day (equal yo 175 units)  Still had a a1c of 11.  I am 7 months out and just stop taking insulin with a A!C of 5.3.

I am hoping that I will remain off of insulin.  Time will tell!

I am a Type 1 diabetic on an insulin pump. My insuling went from 100 units a day to 25. As time passes, I have had to increase my insulin usuage. My A1C was in the 8's and dropped to 6, then I went back up to 7. I am getting my A1c tested tomm, will be curious of the outcome. I have noticed that as a Type 1 I am going back to not having the greatest control, but am doing so much better than prior to my weightloss. Am wondering if it has something to do with how my body is absorbing my food.
I will not complain as my RNY was the best thing I ever did.
Moving on to better health
