I seem to be doing okay getting my fluids in, but I am having one heck of a time getting in 40 grams of protein every day.  I just feel so full most of the day.  Is this normal?

it is normal. i am 11 days out and i still only take 40-45 gr of protein in. its an adjustment for sure. i got the rny. my dietician told me to make sure to drink throughout the day. so in the morning i make a protein shake and sip on it till noonish. then i try to drink milk jello and pudding, oh and purreed soup. i find everyday gets better and i can increase my protein levels.

I drank Six Star Whey Isolate mixed with skim milk = 38 grams of protein in one drink.  I was told I needed 80 grams of protein when I was discharged, so I fould drink  drinks to start with because there was no other way to get my protein in on a full liquid diet the first couple of weeks.  I am now down to 1 drink a day at 5 weeks post-op and hope to be able to stop it all together, although that protein actually doesn't taste bad.  Are you on a full liquid diet now?  I know when I was discharged I was put on a full liquid diet, which allowed me to eat yogurt.  I would only eat Okios Vanilla Greek Yogurt, which is high in protein.

Yes, I am on full liquids.  They told me to do 40/40 for now.  40 oz fluids and 40oz protein.  Just really having a hard time.  I think I only got in 15-20 yesterday.

My surgeon had me sipping/drinking 2 oz every 15 mins, with protein being one of those. With my day starting at 8am and bedtime at 10pm, I was able to achieve their goals (40 protein and 64 oz fluids), including 2-3 naps.

Yep.  I think most people don't get all their protein in for the first couple weeks.  Being low on protein for a week or two shouldn't do any real harm, although you may feel better and heal better if you get adequate protein from the beginning.  You don't want to go too long without enough protein, though, or you may begin to have problems.

60 grams of protein a day is a good amount to aim for at first, although the ASMBS recommends 1.1 grams protein per kilogram ideal body weight, which works out to about half a gram of protein per pound of your ideal weight.  For many people, that's more than 60 grams a day.

I had my surgery on Feb 6 2012 and had one heck of a time with protein and come to find out I still am..... Protein is important because if you dont get enough it will slow down your weight loss. Drink 2 protein drinks a day and it will give you over 40 grams of protein. I have done the best I could getting the protein in and I have lost 69.5 pounds in a little over 3 1/2 months.

Hey Dawn,

I just had my 1st post-op with Dr. C yesterday. I found that if I made a protein shake in the morning w/ 8oz. of skim milk, the "shake" would have 36g. So once in the morning and one in the evening helped me.

I bought the Cytosport 100% Whey Chocolate flavor. It has 27g per scoop.

Here is a link for example. but I bought mine cheaper at Costco.
